Hey -
I'm final getting my studio built and have a question:
We've done the staggered studded walls...but the door jamb is a 2" x 6" that would come flush with dry wall on both sides. Now, I'm not doing the construction myself but having contractors doing it as I explain to them how to sound proof, but I dont have the answer to this. Does the dry wall get nailed into the door jambs? 2x6 or do we stop it before there and fill with acoustic sealant? I'd hate to ruin the staggered wall/isolated sheetrock performance because the would be connected by the door jamb.
We are planning on communicative doors (two doors that meet like in adjoining rooms of a hotel) if that makes any difference.
new construction question

I just put a PM into Rod after reading another posting but:
I want to make sure I understand what I read:
Because I was planning on putting up two solid core doors with MLV on the interior facing sides ... both doors into one jamb (2x6)
But when the framers put it up in the stagger studded wall I realized that it wouldn't be isolated from the interior to the outside in the wall.... The answer I read was to not to worry about it?... that it won't ruin the isolation effects and sound proofing of the stagger studded wall?
Hai xpersrx,
About your wall; you say it's staggered studs. You don't have a double studd wall? I'm assuming you know the difference (maybe a picture of your wall would clear things up, hell you might even wanna do a complete picture slide show for us just to show us what ye doin')
Yes, the drywall (GB) can go up the 2x6 jam since it's part of your wall. Or isn't it?? (pix...words.. u know)
Forget MLV, if it's a stagstudwall I'd advise to build just 1 door; a superdoor as Rod described in his book (you have a copy, don't you?)
No I've heard of Rod's book on here but have never seen it. There is not enough room to build a room within a room (10foot room is to small for double walls), so the staggered studs was considered the best option. I met with the contractors last night to determine a way for the sheet rock to stop just short of the door jamb, then we can fill in with acoustical sealant.
I'll take photos to send up tonight.
If you are on staggered studs, then I honestly don't think that stopping short with the drywall will buy you much, if anything. I suspect that doing it like you say might even actually REDUCE isolation, since your caulk density might not end up matching your drywall. You could create a weak spot, acoustically, all up the edge of your jamb, and with the constant movement of the door opening and closing all the time, you that seal might even fail at some point. I'd go with Rod's plan, and take the drywall right up to the jamb to ensure a good airtight seal that won't fail over time. Like Ro said: For a staggered stud wall, better to go with Rod's Superdoor than two back-to-back doors. And skip the MLV: not cost effective. Just build it the way Rod says, and it will work fine. You don't have his book? You really, really, REALLY need to get it! It's the best possible investment you can make in building your studio. Order it from Amazon, and it will be there in a day or two, hopefully soon enough to help you not make any major blunders with your door! Your door will be your weakest point anyway, so it needs to be built as well as it possibly can be: Massive, on a tough jamb, and with triple seals. - Stuart -I met with the contractors last night to determine a way for the sheet rock to stop just short of the door jamb,

that's the one and only!
Just reserved it at Borders, my wife is gong to pick it up nowthat's the one and only!
Very good. It's a good book that explains all the basics and gives you great tips. It's easy and fun to read too.
Good luck with it!
If yo are in a hurry, doors tart on page 92, but I'd suggest that you spend the time to read the 91 page prior to that, plus the rest of the book too, before you do the door. There are little nuggets all throughout that book. - Stuart -Just reserved it at Borders, my wife is gong to pick it up now
So... a doors tart??? I know they still have fans and all... but groupies for a long ago band??? Or is a doors tart something else? ... like a hooker, maybe??? (sorry... couldn't resist) :)If yo are in a hurry, doors tart on page 92.... - Stuart -
