Hi guys. I've been posting here and there in the design forum for a bit and reading here for quite a bit longer now. I'm not sure if I saw the suggestion here or elsewhere, but I was considering building a bass trap that I've never seen done before so I was looking for some opinions.
I have been thinking of constructing a large rectangular bass trap (approx. 2' x 2' x 6') that would sit horizontally on the floor in the wasted space between my argosy console and the front wall of my small CR.
Here are my two questions:
1) Is it a waste of time to build such a large bass trap when I would get similar results building a corner trap against that wall/floor intersection?
2) If I go with the proposed column should I; a) stuff it full of the pink fluffy stuff, b) superchunk it with OC, or c) build a large quantity of little bass hangers to go inside of it?
Hopefully I will be guided in the way of the most effective results as always here. Thank you.
Under the Desk Superchunk?

sure you can. But you'll benefit from using the corners for basstraps. That's where the low frq is most active.
Thank you Ro, that's what I figured. Maybe someone else wouldn't mind chipping in on a few of the specifics I asked.
Thank you
In doing more research and studying the coefficient tables at SAE, should I frame the box and cover it in 3/16" plywood instead of covering it in burlap for a greater absorption value in the low-mid area and not suck too much of my highs out of my room?
From SAE:
Plywood (5mm(3/16") panel, 25mm(1") fiberglass in 50mm(2") airspace) 0.42 0.36 0.19 0.1 0.08 0.05
I guess I'm just trying to think of clever ways to use wasted space in my control room to enhance the acoustics.
Maybe someone can tell me that I'm way off base here.
Thank you
Sure, if you don't want mid/high being absorbed you'd put a denser material in front (or around). Plywood or a plastic sheet for example.
Bass (low frq) has no (or little) direction so using that space as a low-frequency-controller might be an option to think about. You get more lucky catching those low buggers in any corner of your room, but that doesn't mean there's no bass underneath your desk. Sure, you can make a mean bass-trap over there!
Thanks again Ro. My desk is actually pretty close to the wall so I'm going to build it so that it fits flush against the wall and protrudes under my desk. I was going to originally just build a corner trap for under there but I figured I may as well increase the size and extend it under the back of the desk.
Any thoughts on bass hangers in the box vs. superchunked?
Thanks again!
