Hey everybody. Long time lurker, first time poster. My partner and I have recently bought a building here in Tucson AZ that currently houses a lamination shop, and we're planning on building a project studio into about half of the building. It's a large industrial space- super high ceilings, concrete floors, cinderblock walls. We're going to be doing a lot of treatment for sure, but first we have to deal with a big problem- a large bay door. As in, a garage door made of that roll up aluminum type business, about 20' x 20'. The problem is, there's still a lot of large equipment in the building, and it may have to exit sometime, so the door needs to remain functional. We're thinking of building a wall out from the inside wall enclosing the bay door, and fitting that wall with a large set of double doors. We don't need to completely soundproof the place as it's not really a residential neighborhood, but currently sound pretty much travels in and out of that door as it would through open air. So, anybody ever had to deal with a similar situation? What did you do?
It's really hard to imagine what you are describing without a detailed scale diagram and some photos. You know exactly what it looks like now, exactly what layout you are planning, and exactly why the doors are a problem, but nobody here knows any of that. Try downloading SketchUp from Google, make a 3D model of your space showing the dastardly doors, and also the area where you plan to build your studio, then post the model here. Maybe then folks will be able to give you suggestions. - Stuart -
Seems like if you construct that wall as high as your super high ceilings, it should work, as long as it has more mass then the steel door. Otherwise, doesn't seem like it would be worth the effort.
