Sorry I know this is newbie question but is there a mathematical calculation for determining the optimum size of a bass trap based upon the size of room? I searched and searched but I couldn't find an answer for that here so I'd like to assume that there isn't but I rather look dumb and ask than look dumb and have wasted time and money on a poorly designed bass trap.
thanks all!
Bass Trap size

About the only equation I've heard of for figuring out bass trap size is: "That's not big enough! Make it bigger!".
You might want to check out Ethan Winer's web site ( www.realtraps.com ) for info on bass traps.
Also, do a search for "superchunk". That's pretty much the best way to build one.

To absorb low frq you need VOLUME. A thick sheet of wool (10cm / 4") in the corner will already do miracles. More is better (thick sheets of wool in corners is the mantra here)
I read up on the superchunk trap prior to posting but I couldn't find an exact science to the size. I will check Ethan's site, thank you.
There isn't really that much "science" to it, the way I understand it. The "science" is more in your wallet and the available space, than it is in equations and text books. I read somewhere (looking for the reference, but can't find it) that a bass trap should be 36" across the front face in order to be really effective, but that 24" works reasonably well too. Like Ro said, make it thick. 4" is a good starting point, more is better. - Stuart -but I couldn't find an exact science to the size
