Hi Guys mi name is Cristian and iam from Chile ive been following the forum for quite a while and its a great resource ive learned a lot here.
Well this is the question that i have, in rod s book (yeahh theres a copy in chile, amazon rules), i have read that float glass is the least efficient glass for window construction and in several posts ive seen that laminated glass y what most of you use, well considering that i went to the glass store (i have to say that i live in quilpue, a very small town, there s only two glass stores in the whole city), and this where the options:
10 mm float glass
7mm float glass
5mm float glass
5mm laminated glass
There s nothing else i asked for 10 mm laminated glass o tempered glass and they looked at me like i was crazy
But that to a side i really dont know what should i do. I take from the book that laminated glass is better than float glass but is better a 10 mm normal glass or 5 mm laminated glass, besides i need two glasses for the window son i was thinking about getting in one side the 10 mm floated and in the other the 5 mm laminated.
Iam correct or should i do something else.
Well in the live room there s a layer of 12 mm gypsum board and a 8 mm layer of osb and in the control room theres a single layer of 15 mm plywood (i know that is not much but the budget is tight and things are really more expensive here so i have to do whit what i can get).
Well thanks guys i know iam in great hands.
PD: sorry for my english (i speak spanish)
PD2: Sorry for quality of the pics dont have a camera
Thanks Bye

It's unfortunate that you don't have more options!
Why not try 10mm float in the control room and the laminated on the live room side?
Xspace might bee better help????
yeah its really unfortuned, small town in chile jeje
well thants for the reply
if somebody knows it would be really helpfull to know wich glass would be more efficient in terms of isolation, because it makes a diference, (the control room is kind of apart from the live) so its important that i put the more efficient glass in the live room side.
thanks again
It's all about MASS, just as your walls.
If the floated glass (10mm) has more mass than the 5mm laminated, then go for it.
Hey Christian! Good to see another guy from Chile building a studio!
I was pricing glass a couple of weeks ago, and I found a place that will sell me pretty much whatever I want: float, tempered, laminate, whatever, and in thicknesses up to 19 mm, if I recall correctly. I'm in Santiago (Vitacura), so my choices are clearly rather better than yours in Quilpue(!!!), but I'm sure that this store would ship it to you. If the glass is thick and well packaged with a wooden frame around it, then it should even survive a ride on Turbus! If you are interested, I'll dig out the details of the store, so you can call them. The store actually makes glass furniture in strange curved shapes, with really thick glass, but they will do anything you want. It isn't cheap, though!
Wintec also said they could do custom-designed sliding doors when I asked a few weeks ago, but I don't recall if they also carry laminate.
What size glass do you need?

Ro: Thanks man for the reply, i think im gonna have go with what you say my question was because laminated its better than the floated, i mean a 10mm laminated its better than a 10 mm floated beeing than they both have roghly the same mass, you know, because of the dampening effect of the plastic in between the layers so i was wondering if that effect was so important that even a glass with double the thikness would be less efficient than a much thinner glass but with the layer of plastic in between.
well i guess iam going to have to do with what i can so the 10 mm in the live it is, thanks agian for the reply.
Hey Soundman2020, i recall reading your thread about your estudio design, very interesting, well yeah it would be great if you could send me the info about the glass company, even though imagine how much its gonna cost to ship it from santiago a more even from VITACURA jejejje but someday i guess ill could afford it jejeje
mi glass is 1,6 mt x 1.2 mt the floated 10mm goes for around 48 mil pesos, and the laminated was about 70 mil pesos jejejje, well like i said some day 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch glass its gonna be at my window ejjeje
thanks guys, ill go to install the glass right now
Bye
