First off, some sticky details:
Location - Beautiful Northwest Arkansas - Fayetteville, AR
I'll be moving in the next few years and I figured, hey, why not solidify my studio design so I know what I need to do going in? I figure it will take me at least this long to plan it all out, anyway. It took me a bit just to figure out what layout I wanted. We'll probably be acquiring some land from some relatives and at that point, we'll build a house with a building next to it that will be the studio. I'm thinking I'll have the construction crew build the outside and leave the inside unfinished and unwired. Good idea? I have an electrician in the family so no worry there. The outside will be your standard red house brick, probably.
No real noise concerns. I don't figure the sound will travel far enough on a one acre lot for it to matter.
It won't be a commercial space. I might record bands via word of mouth but it's mostly for my own work and for friends/family that want to record. It, of course, is yet to be built, so I don't have any size constraints per se...but I would like to keep it smaller than a football field.
One of my questions is...I thought I might be able to enter the CR from the hallway on the left right across from the window? This is so I can open the window and let air blow in to air out the CR when I need to. I figured I could frame up a door there and treat one side...the part on the CR side. Same with getting into and out of the vocal booth...just not too sure what to do here, although I'd like to avoid the whole double sliding glass door thing. That being said, I will do it if I need to.
I'm thinking about building something on the ceiling of the control room that will be OC703 in wooden frames that is mounted to joists in the ceiling so it doesn't fall. Above the mix position, I figure I'll drop it down a bit...maybe 3 inches and then put OC703 there as well. Then on the wood frame that creates the drop down, I'll install track lighting. Good idea? Do I need all that on the ceiling of the CR? And what should I put between the wall frames that are straight and the ones that create the angle of the CR on the sides? Hanging treatment? And then slot resos on the sides? And what about the back wall? Use OC703 for the bass traps and then what about that triangle thing in the back that I just ripped off of another graphic?
Also, I'm not entirely sure what to do about the live room's shape. I put that one of the ISO booths is a drum iso but that's a total lie as I'll for sure use the live room for drum recording. That room will be used for storage mostly. The CR storage, I thought I could just get to off of the vocal ISO.
I know an alright amount about acoustic treatment. I would call it a basic understanding. It's hard to learn all about this stuff, have a day job, play in a band, go to school, be married, raise a kid, blah blah blah and still have time to learn as much as I can about acoustics. I'm trying, I really am.
Thoughts? Also, thoughts on general layout would be cool. I did this all from looking at plans from the sticky section. I also looked and saw that the ideal size of a CR is 9’6” x 12’8” x 17’6”...from http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11642.
The desk was my failed attempt at an Argosy desk I'm looking at getting when I do the build. hehe
I tried and tried to get the hang of SketchUp but apparently I SUCK at it. I can't figure the damn thing out at all. So...I resorted to PAINT! :?
I hope I following all of the required information from the "BEFORE YOU POST" sticky. If not, PLEASE forgive me. :cop:
Also, I attached the picture here, but here's a link to a bigger one as well for any manipulation someone might do.

Studio Floor Plan & Treatment

hi,
It seems you cutting yourself short with the games room. Do you really ned that space if it's not going to be a commercial facility?
Remember every m2 adds $$$$
You realy need to give us a scale drawing for us to help you.
1) Toilet- to hard to isolate water sounds! plus it looks too small
2) vocal booth- how do you get in there?
3) Soffits- looks like your going to use floor stands? Read the post on soffits, maybe you change your mind. Soffit mounting increase bass response.
4) Ratio- what is your ceiling height? the control does not have a correct ratio. It's too square
5) Amp room???? maybe
Sorry just to pick at your idea but there are so many options. you need to do more research and sit down with sketch -up for abit.
It is a really easy program- use you learn the keyboard short cuts and bugs!
good luck
lil
Well, I really want the game room to put in a pool table for my friends and family. And I don't want to enter the building in the CR or live room.hi, It seems you cutting yourself short with the games room. Do you really ned that space if it's not going to be a commercial facility?
I don't plan on having anyone in the restroom while I'm recording and I really want the restroom off of the game room. Maybe put it in another location?1) Toilet- to hard to isolate water sounds! plus it looks too small
That was actually one of my questions...in my post.2) vocal booth- how do you get in there?
To me, soffits are too confining. What if I upgrade my monitors? What if a cable goes out? I'd rather have the flexibility of stands.3) Soffits- looks like your going to use floor stands? Read the post on soffits, maybe you change your mind. Soffit mounting increase bass response.
I don't have a ceiling height yet. The building is not built. I will make the control room a bit larger, but I think that will work itself out when I do the scale drawing, I guess.4) Ratio- what is your ceiling height? the control does not have a correct ratio. It's too square
This is something I really want so I'm gonna have one. I don't see a major reason against it. Just my 2 cents.5) Amp room???? maybe
What kind of research do I need to do? And I tried SketchUp...for at least an hour. All I managed to do in that time was draw a square. And that was on the floor plan mode...forget the 3d thing...I couldn't work that thing at all.Sorry just to pick at your idea but there are so many options. you need to do more research and sit down with sketch -up for abit. It is a really easy program- use you learn the keyboard short cuts and bugs!
