Gluing rockwool to block wall

Does anyone here have experience of gluing rockwool to a concrete block wall? If so, what was the outcome? What materials did you use? We have Spanish stuff which is more flexible than we'd anticipated, and 70kg m3 so each panel 1.2m x 60cm x 4cm (47" x 23.6" x 1.6") weighs about 2kg (almost 4.5 lbs) Cheers
I guess the only thing to consider is if the block wall sweats or not. If it doesn't [sweat], then glue whatever you like on the wall:) As long as it is part of a solution then do what you have to do.
Oh my goodness - I'm quite a novice on isolation and all, and really bad on sketchup. I have no idea what a sweaty wall is - could you explain? Sorry!
Condensation, moisture, etc.
This might be a silly question, but why do you want to glue it to the wall? Isn't there a better way of mounting it?
No it's not a silly question. We want to use it to line a new block built cavity wall. If this is the wall laid horizontally, like this: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Concrete blocks filled with sand ooooooooooooooooooo Rockwool 30cm airgap between blocks ooooooooooooooooooo Rockwool XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Blocks XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX I as a novice understand that any mechanical fixing would have to be a special acoustical one if sound is not to travel from the block into the rockwool? Trying to get anything specialist here in Spain is difficult! I don't think the wall will sweat. The room we are converting has been open on one side for years but soil is as dry as a bone. P.S. Had the luck to visit Chile a couple of times on business - what a beautiful country you live in. As I had to go north to visit the mines, I saw the flamingoes in the Atacama desert - unforgettable.
you do not glue the insulation to walls - what you do is to purchase stick pins (insulation hangers) - which are adheared to the surface (you can use an epoxy for this) the the insulation is pushed over the pins - and a holder is locked onto the pin. You can see the pins here: http://www.apidistribution.com/products ... angers.php Rod
Thanks for this Rod, I had read through threads and this is mentioned somewhere. From the link you sent me, it appears that they are metal. So no need for any special acoustical version? I wouldn't know what they are called in English, let alone in Spanish, but I'll have to keep searching! Karen
Rod just beat me to it. Don't ever glue wool, it'll tear apart for starters. Use sticky nails like Rod linked, or anything like that. Just ask you local hardware dealer if you're not sure. Are you gonna build a second wall in front of the existing one? In that case you prolly make a frame... just put the wool in there and you're done.
Thanks for this - very Helpful. I was concerned about risk of shear if we used glue. Have yet to find sticky nails as described, and both the guy who sells the rockwool and his distributor both told me to use glue. Therefore suspect that local dealaer for fixings might inform incorrectly too. What I have found are some screw in ones that are plastic covered, like this, and specifically mention isolation (I would of course check what sort of isolation) http://www.infotarifa.com/clasificacion ... iculo.html We had not intended to build a second wall as all this is inside a 30cm cavity, so a second wall on the inside of the first block wall is doable, but phsically very difficult for the inside of the second one - I'm skinny but not that skinny! Cheers
The link you provided shows a standard wool nail, not what Rod and I were talking about. Tho there's a similarity. As I understand you're situation is as follow: you have 2 concrete walls spaced 30cm apart with no insulation yet. Correct? Wow, that's gonna be tough, putting wool in there. If it's concrete both ways I wouldn't worry about the gap too much. Unless you experience unpleasant "noise" already. dunno, your info is too thin to actually comment on anything.
Once again, thanks for reply. We haven't built the walls yet, so provided I can find these blessed stick pins, and if we build one wall first, getting it on first wall will not be a problem. Getting it on the second wall will be harder, but I have a lovely builder who always comes up with solutions, and my idea is that we pin it on from above as the brickwork advances. Once we reach top courses will be a case of finishing wall to one width of rockwool then pinning it on before starting on next bit of wall. So, is a standard wool nail unsuitable in recording studio build?
I'm confused... you haven't actually build those walls yet? Please, fill us in (details) on your situation. If you haven't build them (what material) then forget about sticky nails and incorporate nails while building the wall. But please give us your plan, we can't comment on loose ends....
Hi, The plan is in the studio design section. You can see from "diagram" above in this thread that we are using concrete blocks filled with sand. As we can't get stick pins here, we will use a plastic mesh instead to hold it in place. If you embed nails in the block wall on which you then impale the rockwool, won't the nails transfer sound from the wall to the rockwool?
If you're building from scratch, then atleast you have a wide choice of options. One of'm is to add those nails you linked earlier right into the cement when stacking the blocks. No, soundtransfer stops in the wool (well, atleast no flanking to the other wall happens)
I will go and buy some "nails"!
