Hello, My name is Josh. I live in western Massachusetts, US. We are buying a house and I need a place for band rehearsal, recording and mixing. The attic seemed large enough when I first looked at the house, but I'm beginning to think it will not be. Here is the current layout of the attic and some pictures of the space. We havent closed on the house yet, but we should own it soon. I'm hoping for a live room with enough space for drums, guitarist/singer and bass player for rehersals, and a control room. I dont think there will be any room for a vocal booth, but a quiet control room should be ok for that? That darn chimney is in the way of everything! The stairs are not in a great spot either. Storage will probably take place under the eves. The measurements are in the sketchup file. The peak of the attic is about 10ft 9 inches. But there is some bracing at about 8'8". I will be doing all the hammer work and construction myself. I believe I am capable of building pretty much anything as i've got carpentry and electrical experience. My budget is roving.. but its about a couple thousand to get me started. I know there's not a lot of space, but any ideas you can come up with would be awesome. Your input is greatly appreciated! -josh

josh - I'd place the control room on one side and the studio on the side with the pillar. I'd have windows on either side of the staircase you so look over the staircase from the control room to see into the studio and the small space at the top of the staircase can become a sound lock between the rooms and the stairs. cheers john
Thank you John, With your suggestions I tried a few layouts. I like the idea of a sound lock. I tried that in the first pic, but things are pretty tight in the room with that chimney. So would a single or double wall close together on the mix side be alright? That way it would be easier to move equipment up into the rooms since the doors are so close and it would give me more options when it comes to placing mics on a kit. See the second pic. Should 2" of 703 on the chimney be enough to kill weird reflections & prevent me form whacking my headstock on the bricks? :) -josh ps I can not upload my sketchup files as they are too big.

The last pic is what I had in mind except I'd swing the desk sideways so the live room is on your right. The ceiling will then slope upwards from infront.
Thanks John, sort of like this? What are the issues with doing a single wall rather than the walls on either side of the doorway? I'm just concerned with having more openness I guess. Also would a room with a peak like this, where are the optimal places to put absorption? Aslo I suppose with such a small place, i would not benefit from any diffusion? cheers, Josh

Josh - in sketchup goto Window/model info/statistics/purge unused and see if you can get the model down in size. then you can post it. otherwise remove the drum kit from the model will probably do it.

John, I purged the file it went from 13mb to about 7mb then without the drumset was 6.5mb. So I uploaded it to some of my webhosting. Hope thats ok. http://newenglandhorses.com/TEMP1/studio1.skp
HI, Where it says unusable safe- is that due to the height only? Not that it's structurally un-sound? that will be great spots for bass traps and maybe storage.

It will be used for storage. Its simply not usable space because of height issues. -josh
