Hey people, I hope this topic belongs in this forum and not in the Construction one... Ro, I know... :) Last night I had a very interesting conversation with an old friend who happens to work as a mechanical engineer and specializes in HVAC design. Although I didn't quite get everything that he threw at me (I definately got the part that includes four figure checks  ), I went home and made a quick sketch of the design I had in mind (sketchup file attached below). As you can see in the picture below (and I hope I can describe it correctly with my poor english in the way  ), an intersection of a typical wall (5cm (2") of fiberglass wool insulation, 5cm (2") total thickness of drywall), with the 20cmx20cm (8"x8") minimum aluminium or plastic HVAC channel hidden behind the corner on the wall that it passes by. To cover this unwanted (visually and acoustically) corner, a 1m (3f) bass trap is attached to wall and celing with fiberglass wool insulation inside and a cloth to cover it. Fixed (and sealed) to the channel (where we want the air to get in or out of the room) we have 10cmx10cmx50cm (4"x4"x20") wooden (plywood, mdf, whatever) with silencers (covered by the bass trap of course). My question is: Can I implement this design? Is it doable? Is it gonna work? These are actually three questions but... what the heck! :) Your feedback is, as always, much appreciated. Greetings from sunny Crete 8) , John

What? No comments for this design? I thought you liked this kind of threads, new design, flame it or praise it! :P And I get neither? Whatever... I think it's nice... :thu:
Hai John, sorry for the delay. I've been extremely busy lately... bought a new house. And with every new house there's some (re)construction to be done.. you know. :) In short: it looks like a plan. You might wanna throw a "that's a 3 leaf!" comment at it, but that's just too bad. There's gotta be some mass around the HVAC so why not, indeed, cover it with wool and call it a basstrap. Good plan if you'd ask me.

Hey Ro! Long time, no see man! Just days ago I was wondering of where you might be... Well, now we know! Congrats on your new house! Believe me, I know about reconstructions... I'm still waiting for my fiancee's house to finish... Reconstruction started 3 months ago...

Sorry man, I didn't get that... I don't see any 3 leaf system... The only real mass in the design is the drywall layer... :? Anyway, it's good to have you back, man! :thu:
Thanx, I've got a ton of (new) threads to view so that'll take all of my spare time.. damn. No, the 3-leaf comment not worth quoting on. And, indeed, if your inner wall will wrap around the HVAC pipes then that's even a better plan. :yahoo:

This forum needs your comments man, just take your time... Btw, you should check my thread, new development, new perspective of things, new area, new design!

Well, that's the idea, drywall bends around the pipe (the pipe can sit on the drywall or be suspended from the ceiling, the HVAC guys can determine that) and creates two corners along that wall that we cover with the bass trap. I'm sure poeple have done that in the past, I'm not tring to reinvent the wheel here, I'm just illustrating that for future reference. Cheers, John
