Hi to everybody on this wonderfull board. Well I am finally building my own studio, it's goind to be a fresh build from the ground up - so not only the interior but the whole building is new from scratch. I have read tons of literature on the web as well as many books, so basically I have planned everything based on all the available info. Location: Halic, Slovak Republic, it's a small village, nieghbours cca 5 to 10 meters from my building. Looking for the biggest possible STC. The building itself will be built from YTONG LAMBDA blocks, the model with the very good heath isolation figures - λ=0,087 W/m.K.. the thickness of the outer walls is 375 mm. The building itself is really straigthforward - 4 walls, one floor and that's it. The rough structure was planned to allow me maximum flexibility with the interior. The only things beside the studio itself will be a kitchen, lounge, bath and accomodation for 4 people. How loud I am ? Doing mostly rock it;s abvious that I as loud as a drum set or guitar stack. I am monitoring based on the bob katz K system - so that loud are my monitors. Budget for the studio is about 1,5 mil SKK that's 50 000 EUR. Most of it will be spent on material itself as labor is really cheap here and I will be doying lots of stuf on my own. The studio itself will have a CR (cca 21m2, 4,8mx4,36m), LR (cca 37 m2, 7,9mx4,90m) + a vocal booth (cca 4,5 m2, - 2,30x2,30, side walls angled by 10 degrees). the Ceiling heigth is 3 meters, it may vary +/- 10/15 centimeters depending on the HVAC design. the building itself should have 3,2 meter high ceilings. I am planning the following accoustic components to the room as seen on the sketchup renderings Control Room: 2x bass traps in the front corners. what would be a better design ? superchunk or hangers ? I am leaning towards the hangers. huge bass trap on the rear wall (40 cm thick, 70 on the sides), again probably hangers + a recessed QRD diffusor in the middle of the trap (2,08m x 1m) tuned to diffuse down to 500hz. all bass traps are angled 30 degrees in the corners. 2x broadband helmolz absorbers on the side walls angled by 8 degrees, my idea is that it should provide quite a board frequency range because from the fron to back the distance from the wall will vary, this together with a well calculated space between the slats should get me a fairly good range. The ceiling will be divided to 2 parts - the back of the room untill the start of the absorbers will have 15 cm thick hangers, then the ceiling will be angled 6 degrees down to the beginning of the room. Again hangers in this part too. Live room: one huge bass trap - same desgin as in CR in the back of the room near the booth. 2x bass traps in the opposite corners. One wall will be a giant helmolz absorber again angled in 8 degrees. Accoustic panels (120cm,60cm) on the opposite wall + a cloud of 4 panels above the place where the drumkit will (should be). Booth: This isn't finished yet but I am planning the same hangers in the ceiling as in the control room, 2 walls with slat resonators (the walls in the corner) and accoustic panels on the remaining 2 walls. Any opinions about the whole design ? Did I forgot something ? Construction wise the walls will be built on a steel frame, stuffed with insulation + 2 layers of drywall (possibly 3). The steel frame will be on neoprene pads to reduce virations through the floor. Than we will build a light floated floor inside the rooms - we will lay down polystyrene pads, then covert them with OSB board and finally lay down the laminate flooring. As you can see on the drawing the LR will have double doors and windows. All glass doors and windows will have soud proofed glass (45db isolation according to the specifications). looking forward to any comments David

Hi David. There is an announcement at the top of the forum about what to do to assure getting as many responses as possible. The announcement leads to this post. Actually, several people, who are experts on this forum, will not reply if you do not do what is written in the post. Many others who are very helpful, will not reply out of respect for the moderators' wishes. - Stuart -
To my best knowledge all the required info is now included in the post. At least I hope so :?
Edit your profile with your country, city, village info, so that each time you post something, it appears on your profile tab. My advice to you, take one step at a time... first design, then construction, then treatment. There's nothing wrong with thinking ahead, without interefering with the current phase you are on though... I can see you've done your homework, you know what you want and you got the budget to do it. I think you'll be fine. Good luck, John PS: How far is Nove Zamky from you?

Well, I am planning the whole build for one year from know, Finally I have all the paperwork done so I can actually start building the studio (we'll start as soon as the winter ends). The renderings I have submitted are revision 5 :) hope they are final (at least pretty close). Construction wise I am quite confident with what I am planing and how It should be built, I am more worried about the accoustic treatment. Anyway my plan with the treatment is to measure the bare rooms once they are built and than starting one piece a time - make the ceiling traps, measure. build the front and back traps, measure again. build the helmolhz resonators, measure again and tune based on the previous measurements. PS: Nove Zamky is around 150 km :) thanks David
"Looking for the biggest possible STC." What type of roof system will this building have? Will that be a wooden structure roof or spanned concrete, or...? Your interior stc is going to be decided by the windows and doors. It may also be altered by wall height and how you develop your ceilings per room. Your two leaf wall design needs attention on a room by room basis. It breaks up depending on what room you are in. If I had interest in running simple cad programs, I could be of more service in this area. And since this is a stand alone building, a little attention to the slab, what thickness, etc., would eliminate your concerns with thinking you need some type of floated area. It most likely will be added cost and yield little usable results.
Hi, the roof structure is visible in the attached plan. It's a prefabricated wodden frame, the ceiling will be made of drywall, with a 160mm and 60mm layers of insulation according to the project. The inner ceilings construction will be on metal studs, 3 layers of drywall (all the drywall is 12,5mm) and the metal studs will be attached to the building ceiling with resilient clips. The polystyrene floor with a layer of OSB board was chosen because of the significant cost saving over a real floated floor (concrete or wodden frame). Hope this helps.
