hi new here, just want to say firstly that what i am asking is not for a recording studio, but it does include acoustics, speaker arrangement and sound proofing. But I will try and ask anyway. Ok, firstly I live in Melbourne, Australia. This is my bedroom in our new house that we are renovating at the moment. Construction is in progress. measurements are in the pictures below. First of all I need this room as sound proof as possible now i have about $2000 - $2500 AUD for materials (labour work is all ready sorted). The main problem is sound (from loud movies and music) entering the 2 bedrooms on the other side of 1 wall (internal wall) But also important to keep the neighbors happy as well. Now i am guessing it should work both ways (I wont hear anything coming from outside my room either, eg. traffic, people talking etc.). The window and door frames are alluminium and the door kinda looks like a big window (one large glass panel with frame) Current plan of attack is: 3 sheets of "boral soundstop 13mm" plasterboard, "boral noise control" insulation bats, "foil board" foam/foil insulation board, plus a product called "green glue" (goes between one or two layers of the plasterboard) all round including ceiling and other side of the problem wall(internal wall) (apart from the green glue which is too expensive for the whole room, so it will only be on the problem wall that is shared with the bedrooms), Also acoustic carpet underlay (under the carpet obviously). I will add links to these products bellow. Also I will seal power points and down lights as best i can with fire rated "fulla foam" expanding foam, and acoustic putty. Also, I am unsure about the positioning of the speakers, at the moment I will be getting good quality computer speakers (they do the job & and are cheap) they are Logitech Z-5500 5.1. Please look at the pictures below to see the 2 speaker positions, either in each corner or in more towards the tv (and me). I'm not sure what else to tell you, but yea if you have any advice on anything i would appreciate it, but yea the sound going through the wall into my parents bedroom and my brothers bedroom is my biggest concern. So some input would be good. http://www.boral.com.au/article/cinemazone.asp?AUD=homeGarden_PlasterboardPlasterProducts http://www.acousticalsolutions.com/products/damping/green_glue.asp http://www.greengluecompany.com http://www.foilboard.com.au/ http://hbfuller.com.au/catalog/diy/adhesives/fula-foam.html?Itemid=26 http://www.acousticalsolutions.com/products/blocking/putty_pads.asp Thanks a lot in advance for your time and help, much appreciated.

If you could post a SketchUp model of the room and the surrounding rooms, that would help. But basically for good isolation you need to build a decoupled and isolated "room within a room" system, with a two-leaf wall all around you, including the ceiling. That means a normal double stud wall (two sets of studs) with 2 or 3 layers of normal gypsum board (="sheetrock", ="plasterboard", ="drywall") only on the outsides of the studs, green glue between the layers of gypsum board, packed full of fiberglass or mineral wool insulation in the gap between the leaves, everything sealed up hermetically. This will give you the "mass-spring-mass" principle that is the best way to achieve good isolation. The gypsum board layers on the outside of your fist stud frame is the first "mass", the air gap plus insulation is the "spring", and the gypsum board layers on the outside of the other stud frame is your second "mass". It has to be sealed hermetically to work properly, but if you do it right, you can achieve excellent isolation. There are many variations, and many ways of accomplishing this. Use the "search" feature of this forum and you will find them all. You can probably do it without tearing down existing walls too much, and you can probably re-use some of the material you tear out to as part of the treatment. But use the "search" button here a lot. It is your new best friend!

That probably won't go very far. Green Glue alone is going to take a fair chunk out of that, but you also mentioned windows and doors that need treating, and thick laminate glass (which is what you will need) is expensive. You might need to re-think that, if you want to do it right. What is your floor made of?
BTW. Putting speakers in corners is usually a bad idea! For correct speaker placement, search this forum for something like "5.1 speaker placement" and you'll find out how to do it right. Since you will also be using a sub-woofer in your system, you'll need to consider that in your wall isolation design: low bass frequencies are the hardest of all to deal with. To stop those, you need good decoupling and lots of mass in your "mass-spring-mass" equation.
