Hello Everyone!
I thought I had it all figured out until I happened upon this site! Good thing in my opinion becuase I believe I would have made a mistake on the basic design I had in mind of the 1100 sqft store front office space I just leased to put my recording studio in.
Right now I only do Hip Hop and R&B but I plan on doing live bands and choirs in the new place.
Location: IN
Building: Commercial Space with neighbors on either side. The space has a glass entrance door on the left hand side of Front. The front is completely covered in commercial glass that goes from 3 feet off of ground to 2 feet from the ceiling. Dropped ceiling at 9'7"
Space is 20' wide and 53' long. It has a small bathroom in left rear corner. The back door is located in the middle of the rear of the store about 5 feet from bathroom door. There is cinderblock on all 3 sides of space.Other than that the space is wide open and begging for an awsome layout.
Questions:
1. I noticed in a lot of designs on this site that the live room and/or booth is not in front of the control room and was wondering was that because of a specific reason?
2. I noticed in a lot of designs on this site that most doors are doubled sliding glass doors. Can tradition exterior solid core doors be ultizied? I have checked on the sliding doors and at $1200 a pop I dont think they are in my budget.
3. I do alot of midi music production and in my current setup my keyboards and MPC are in the CR. Would it be more practicle to have a preproduction room considering the space and needs?
4. The large glass front concerns me and I was thinking of buildign a wall 3 feet in front of it all the way across to offer a reception window and also not depend on the glass door for security purposes.

I have been checking this post every hour on the hour. The Wall in front of the window will be plywood covered by drywall and double drywall on the other side with a steel comercial frame and a solid core fire rated veneer door. I have visited tons of designs from the guys on this forum but none with the regular rectangle with door in front center and door in back. I have a good idea of what I should do but would be so cool to have one of those scetchup drawings as a guide line. I have downloaded and been fumbling with it for the last 48hrs but cannot get close to the cool stuff the guys on this forum come up with any help would be appreciated. I also know that this kinda of stuff takes a little time so if compensation is needed let me know
avare from Gearslutz has helped me with an initial drawing.

And finallly heres my opinions on the drawing avare helped me with so far.
You nailed the Deminsions perfectly! That looks awsome and it makes the wall in front of the glass front functional. I was thinking about a lounge area in there somewhere too but this really puts things in perspective! Now I dont think I have enough room to do what I originaly planed with the lounge area and reception area (not that I have a reception now or even plan on having on!) without comprimise to working space.
1. The control room looks a little big now but I noticed you had paralled walls in the CR and the reason why my brain has been hurting is because of trying to avoid parallel walls. So I was thinking if the side walls angled to the back of the room leaving enough room for a large couch and the lost room on the left could be a small storage closet and the space on the right is where I could install the door and it would add a little flavor to the outside area and not be so boxy I think would be cool?
2. Instead of 2 small Iso rooms could the room on the left be configured as a small lounge that I wanted to put a small snack Kitchen in. Would be cool if Access could be from where you have the door now and through back where bathroom is? It seem like the Iso booth would have to be downsized but would this comprimize sound quality and estatics?
3. Was also thinking that maybe I would want to put the door to the Iso room on the main hallway, that way I could put a longer window in the middle of the slanted wall? and Be a little more Isolated if I put another door in the Hallway for air lock?
4. The window in the CR is to small IMO I would like to put 6' window in CR for clear visual to the Iso booth which I would probally be doing most of my recordings?
Thank you sooooo much bro! This has been a dream of mines since 1993 and its finally coming true! Thank you Thank you Thank you!
"Can tradition exterior solid core doors be ultizied? "
A solid core door is good.
An exterior door can be good, if it is in fact, solid core. A metal exterior door is not a solid core door, not that you said that, I'm just using magic here ;)
A solid wooden door or cored wooden door is often recommended. Glass needs to meet your isolation requirements.
