New plans for studio in Norway

Hi all! Ok, so I figured it was best to start from scratch to avoid confusion (and most of the now not-so relevant photos and posts of my previous thread). Besides, if I thought I had done my homework in my last thread, I have now discovered that I was far from it. It is a bit of information overflow looking around here though, I keep opening new tabs and new browsers on things I need to read about while I read about something else in the first place, and eventually my browser crashes ;) A lot of my questions should be put under the "Studio Construction" part of the forum, so I'll try and restrict this first post to just design issues. (I have some questions about wall and floor recommendations a local hardware store here gave me). Overview I'm currently researching and planning again, having gone from wanting to make a control room in the basement of our garage, to moving it "up" and using one side of the garage itself instead. I'm going to use the room to do my productions and remixes in, and I will do little to no tracking that requires mic'ing up speaker cabinets and so forth. I would like to have the ability to do good vocal tracking, but that is not a priority now. I might be able to use a corner of the garage basement for that later. I want to be able to make mixes I can trust at home (who won't), and I feel that's not the case in my current situation where I'm just sitting in an almost square box (one of the bedrooms in our house). I can hear all kinds of phase cancellations going on, and at what's supposed to be the "sweet spot" there is basically no bass right now. I need to fit a lot of synths (10-12 with keys) and rack gear (35 rackspace units) into the new room. I have a custom build desk I might use if it fits, i need to make an exact measurement of how wide it is. I think it might be a tight fit. EDIT: oops, no way it's gonna fit. It's 3.40m wide... Gotta have something else made, or see if something argosy have made will fit. I have a set of Event PS8 monitors and also a set of the good old Yamaha NS10. I was thinking about soffit-mounting the PS8's and having the S10's on my desk or on speaker stands. Oh and apologies if I use some terms that are off or downright incorrect, I'm Norwegian and have ok English-skills I think, but when it comes to building and materials, some of the technical terms are unknown to me. How loud I am I work at a relatively low volume (Like, our daughter is sleeping in a very nearby room), with the occasional crank up to check how it performs at loud levels. I suspect the working-level will be louder once I have the ability though. I do electronic/club/house music. I've trying to get a sound pressure level meter, so I will be able to get back to you about the exact levels. We live in a calm neighbourhood, and my closest neighbour (elder people) is about 5-6m from the outer wall of our garage. Due to the fact that I (still) have a "dayjob" and a kid, I have to do music either very early, early evening/late, or sometimes at night. We have a daughter and another on the way, but even with loud levels I don't really think that's gonna be a problem at night, since they will be inside the house. Details of the current structure The garage consists of the upper floor where we park our car, and a basement. It is built after the house, has a concrete slab and cinderblock walls in the basement part, long cinder "blocks" (plank?) laid across the floor, a thin cement layer on top of that. (see attachment) The garage top walls are regular 2x4 with a single layer of gypsym board on the interior walls and ceiling. The outer walls are paneled. The side of the garage that is towards the house, seems not to have its own wall, I'll try to explain: In the basement for example, three of the outside walls are newer type cinder block, while the fourth wall, on the house-side, is older style cement/concrete blocks of some kind, with internal "slots" in them. On the upper wall facing the house, I'm not sure what's behind the gypboards, if that's just insulation and then the house inner wall or what. I was thinking of using the space like this: I have yet to work out what walls to be angled, etc.. The door is placed somewhat away from the rear wall so that I can have room for a bass trap in that corner.. And I guess there should be a double door. I have been at a local hardware/material store, (a big chain here in Norway), and had a meeting with one of the bosses there. We talked for like two hours, and he made some calls to a company called "Glava" who does insulation, and talked to an acoustics guy there. They adviced me to build the walls and the floor like this: Questions 1. Where do I angle my walls in such a narrow space? If I use the wall design the acoustic guy recommended, and have paralell walls, I end up with a 2.75m wide room roughly. Or should I just use diffusors on the walls and leave the walls straight? 1b. Is even a small angling of one of the walls efficient? Say I angle the entire new dividing wall by a few degrees... 2. Is it called joists in the ceiling and studs in the walls? 3. Should I build the ceiling angled (I can do that since we have to rip off the current gypboard), or make a "cloud"? 4. If I have an angled ceiling, how many degrees should it be angled? 4b. Should it be angled all the way from front to back, or just from front wall and to a certain point before the rear wall? 6. Would I still benefit from basstraps where the back wall meets the ceiling, if the ceiling is angled? 7. Should I soffit mount my Event PS8 monitors? (I know there are a million "should I soffit mount my X/Y/Z monitor" questions here, but I haven't been able to discern whether or not a specific type of monitor set should be soffit mounted or not) 8. If I soffit mount the PS8's, and put the NS10's closer to me, will they obstruct/hurt the sound coming from the PS8's? Depends on the positioning of it all, I suspect? 9. I can't remember seeing anything about it, but would you rather prefer to have measurments in feet/inches? Budget The guy at the hardware store said he could give me good discounts, and he roughly estimated that the "regular" building materials wouldn't be more than $1818. Then he needed to check out some specific prices for some of the materials. I told him I'd be happy if I could land under $4000. He said he thought that was no problem at all. Next weekk he'll give me a price on the materials we discussed. (I'll write more about that in the Construction forum) Best, Alex
