Hello people, after leaving my old place and having no place for two months (and being forced to work at my home) I am happy to be able to set up a new personal studio for my work needs. hell was I envious of all the people here building their dream studios but now I can join you all again :) in order to give me suggestions I think its important for you to know what I do and how I work. So first a bit of background : I am a Songwriter/Producer located in Germany. So the studio will not be for rent to anyone who pays. Just me and the clients (Vocalists, Bands) I work with. It will be used for composing, editing and maybe recording if possible. This will be a place where music is created, because of that to me a creative workflow and a inspiring environment is MUCH more important than perfect sounding rooms or straight lined frequency responses. personally i really like some kind of living room feeling opposed to the sterile technic obsessed dentist labs I see very often. And I also want to use as much as possible from the big windows. I like that beautiful third floor view and the daylight. Over the last years I have worked in several different studios, large and small. In the past I always built the rooms I worked in like the common ones (control room, live room, iso booths). Just because everyone else does it that way I thought THAT must be the right way. But the longer I did this things I realized that my personal workflow reaches into a different direction and many things were more of a handicap than useful. For this project I personally would prefer a one-room-studio design. Mostly because of the more intimate feeling it generates with my clients, partly because of accessibility, partly because of building costs (important to say that this place is only for rent. So the installments dont have to be moveable everyday but I want to take them with me when going to a new place some years later and need something portable). I have searched for some threads here on this subject and also found some but most have a disadvantage to me. Most are designed in a way were the console is faced to the wall and not to the inside of the room. That way when I am in front of the console the artist is behind my back. I had to work that way at home and really disliked it. to me its much more comfortable when facing the artist and still having the console in front of me. So the main goals for me are : - One big room studio - A RFZ zone while recording and mixing - facing the artist while recording Most clients I have are in the pop/rock genre so main intruments for recording will be drums, guitar amps, synths etc. but workflow changed in that case too. More and more I am tracking drums in a friends studio. Tracking in my own studio mostly is for preproduction while working on the song and many clients still feel not comfortable enough with edrums. When tracking electronic guitars I always just record the DI-Signal with the client (amp on moderate level for monitoring) and after editing it I use a reamping device at my home to record different guitar amps with it (simply because there I can crank it up to maximum and I am not in a hurry there). Those were the loud things. Tracking vocals, acoustic guitars etc. should be no problem anyway here. The place is located in the third floor of a commercial building. I already placed a drumkit and an amp there to test the effect on the surroundings. In the fifth floor is a living space. I talked to the owner to avoid complaining. local laws say I am allowed to have a maximum sound pressure level of 35db (A) to the outside. measuring in the living space tells me a level of 32db (A) to 42db (A) while playing drums in my room. Thinking about building a drum riser filled with sand on neopren pads, maybe someone has an idea if that already could be enough. pheew... so much text. If you read all until here thanks for taking your time :) Would be interesting for me what your thoughts are on all of that and if some maybe already have a some suggestions to improve my ideas. greetz, Heiko (who tried to keep his english as correct as possible)
