just finished the first part of rod's book up to room treatments. well worth the money. the best book i've read on studio design/construction to date. one thing that isn't covered much is exterior walls. i have a freestanding structure. 2x4 on 24" framing with old badly worn redwood siding. taking off the old siding will be a cost and has lead issues. new wood siding is very expensive both cost and labor. one idea is to plywood siding over the old redwood. less labor, less lead, and more mass i assume. issue: will the seal be as easy with this overlap? the final design will be a double wall construction with 2 leafs. but for now i need to seal the structure. one leaf. one wall. there are a few options. anyone want to comment or point me to a resource? thanks.

cporro, step outside the box please........ you have all the info you need - an outside framed wall is just a floor on it's side........... you can add mass to the inside of the wall bays exactly the same as you add mass to the underside of the floor............ And then just conventionally side the exterior of the building with the material of your choice. Rod
lordy, i wasn't expecting a reply from the author. thanks rod. i actually was thinking of adding mass the way you detail for ceilings. but i think you get better answers if you leave things open and don't lead. as for thinking outside the box i'm too fricken scared to. not only is some of this stuff counter intuitive, but i'm new to it. thinking inside the box is gonna save my ass. that's why i got you're book. know thy box. so you don't see an issue putting plywood siding over existing redwood?
