Hi Guys!! This is only my second post on this fantastic forum 8) 8) 8) shame it went down for a while, just as I was learning so much :( anyway, having used Ethans Modecalc to determin my room sizes ? I`ve drawn up a basic plan without any room treatment and I know you guys could put me straight on a few of the finer points of studio construction, so please feel free to shoot me down in flames!!! I hope to start construction in late Febuary or early March and would like to iron out any probs before that time! thanks in advance Ted

Bloody hell John!!! that looks cool!! am I right in thinking, the angled black lines Around the CR are Bass traps, diffusers, etc??? The CR is 13ft 1" x 10ft 9"x Ch 7ft 5" as worked out on the Modecalc giving me a ratio of 1 : 1.28 : 1.54 >This volume: 1214 The live room(for want of a better discription) as of coarse changed!! I understand that this space is far to small,to be a live room as such I intend to use it to record Vocals, brass,Guitars and Bass. Do you think a room of this size could be used to record a Kit? or is that asking to much. Thanks for the help John,my aim at the moment is to get together all the materials to build the inner and outer shell. Some I have allready, steal studs etc, just one more Question mate!! the outer shell at the moment has the top wall and left hand wall as you veiw the plan, pre built ...Brick!! do you think I should continue building the other walls in brick or would you recomend another material such as thermo blocks\concrete?? once again big thanks Ted. 8)
Well - as you say Ted - it is small. The angles in the CR in the front section are there to create the RFZ (reflection free zone) for the monitors - whereas the rear are for absorption. in a room that small that's basically what you need - it's not big enough for diffusers. Yes the studio area is small but so long as you reduce the verb time EVENLY you could record vocals, gtrs or drums in there. As far as continuing in brick it really depends in whether you are setup for brick - i.e. concrete mixer sand and gravel etc. Otherewise continue in timber or steel frame. cheers john
wow!! fast reply mate!! I can build in any materials that are suitable John I work in the building industry,Im a Carpenter\joiner but I can also lay bricks etc,and I`ve worked with steel studing many times, just wonderd what would be the best for isolation? The red walls in my plan, represent the finished brickwork the outer shell, then a three inch air gap, then the inner room. Is this the right way to go about it?? please could you clear something up for me here john? In my original plan, the gray lines represent steel studs, resilant bars and the recomended plasterboards to create the room within a room! now the angled walls that create the RFZ!! are these a seperate stud construction or made from other materials? also is that a standard patio door?.. say upvc double glassed or simmilar.
Ah - good to know you are a carpenter :) If your outer wall is brick - fine - the inner walls become your second skin. You don't need resilient channel as there is no plaster on the other side of the inner wall - just the 3" airgap and Insulation in the cavity. RC is only used where you have a single stud wall with drywall on BOTH sides - the RC lifts the drywall off the the stud frame and stops the vibration of the frame from getting to the drywall thus increasing STC. The most common use of RC is when you are in a basement and are attaching your plaster to the floor joists and want a good STC from upstairs.. The angles walls for the RFZ are usually built as a Slot resonator which is a sealed cavity with slats across the front - do a search on this site for that or better still go and look at what others have done at the Studios Under Construction site http://johnlsayers.com/Studio/index.htm check out Blue Bears slots. The doors are sliding glass doors but try to get some with a decent seal top and bottom - do a search for these as well as we've covered them before many times. cheers john

Well if i can be of any use to yourself or other posters I would be pleased to help!! John I followed up your link to Blue Bear, nice studio!! but it set me thinking, :? :? would this type of ceiling be of any benifit to my humble set up?? I will be pitching the roof over the width of the studio ie,the shortest span, and from top side ceiling to ridge board would be,I geuss 4 to 5 ft of loft area do you think could I utilise this space in any way?? or would it just complicate matters, ie,,room modes etc!
A pitched roof will be fine Ted - non-parallel floor to ceiling is good and the extra volume will help also. cheers john
