Hello,
Great forum. I love the enthusiasm out there!
I'm starting my first studio build. It's in my basement on Long Island, NY. I'm hoping you guys can help me out with the layout and then I'll post pics as I build it.
The outer lines on the attached pic is poured concrete. It's about 21.5' long and 10.5' wide (measured from the left wall to the stairs). The ceilings are 7' high with 2x10 joists running up and down the image.
The loudest playing in the studio is going to be a set of drums as I will be using this studio for private recording with most all instruments going directly into the board. Drums, vocals, and acoustic guitar will be the loudest thing going on, but I can't believe that would ever be all at once.
Only one neighbor nearby, probably 50 feet away, on the bottom, where the window is.
My main goal is to isolate the sound from my basement from the rest of the house. The weakest point is the ceiling, which is right under my living room.
Budget: I've already bought a lot of 2x4s for framing, MLV, and a lot of green glue. Also, a bunch of iso clips from soundisolationcompany. Hopefully I won't have to buy much more than drywall and carpeting, but I can spend another $1000 or more if needed.
My plan is to build a dual frame construction studio with a layer of 5/8" drywall sandwiching green glue on the inside and outside frames. The ceiling will have a layer of MLV followed by iso clips followed by the same 5/8" drywall -> Green Glue -> drywall layer as the walls.
On the image, the line on the left that continues to the top and then goes right to left, is a baseboard water pipe. There is also a pipe that is the main water intake to my house. I'd like to keep some space between the pipe and the outer studio wall so that if needed, I can access the pipes, hence the spacing. I thought the diagonal wall might also help create some reverb from some articles I've read, but that could certainly be wrong.
There are two support posts as indicated in the image, with a large beam that runs the width of the house.
My main goal is to build a single room recording studio for drums, and guitar, where I can also mix. I'm mostly concerned with isolating sound and then creating a good sound for recording.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks! --Bob
