Hello there, I recently came across a local furniture repair guy who has a bunch of black suede sheets just big enough to cover my 2x4 rigid fiberglass sheets that I intend to hang on the wall. This would look really posh in my room but I am wondering if it is too thick for this purpose and if I would be better off to go with something less dense for the covering material?? Thanks for your help.
I believe the golden rule is: If you can hold the fabric to your mouth and breathe/blow air through it- you're fine. Sound will be able to get in...otherwise you'll be reflecting rather than absorbing certain frequencies. This may or may not be a good thing, it really depends on your situation.
Like studio_drums said, you prolly need some open-weave texture. But it also kinda depends on your goals. If your panels are to be the broadband absorbing kind then yea you don't need too much thickness. For basstrapping it's not that important since low frq waves will travel through any cloth anyway. Further more it's wise to have some fire retardant material.
