I've got some of that stuff they use in the HVAC bussiness. It's only a 1/2" thick insulation and has an aluminum looking backing on it.Would that work,if I get it thick enough for a bass absorber or would the backing act more as a reflector?
1/2" thick ain't thick enough for some decent basstrapping. You could use the alum.side for reflecting higher frq if you want pure basstrapping. For a more broadband absorber you could rip of the backing or put the backing side on the back (pref. flat against the wall)
Sorry, didn't make myself clear enough.I was talking about cutting it and stacking on top each other to make it thicker, say 2" thick. If I do that inside a wood frame and take the "backing" off the top layer would that be sufficient?I just don't know anywhere around here to buy the 703 or rockwool so I'm trying to do whatever I can to make something work for the time being.

Read this then notice there is an entire forum devoted to building products and where to get them on the site. Andre
You can always cutoff the aluminum back. if it works depends on the properties of the product. What is the brand ? Armstrong ?
in that case, yes rip it off and stack-it.
