Hi everyone, I have 4'x8' sheets of OSB board that I want to put up on the 2"x4" studs in my garage (at 24" OC). I will then cover the walls with cloth material and then on top of the cloth attach various widths of 1" panel wood with gaps between each panel wood, as the finished wall. Is this ok? or do I have to cover the walls with 4'x8' sheets of plasterboard? Thanks for the help.. Regards, Paul
OK for what? OK for isolation - for acoustics - for looks? You need to provide a little more detail than what you have...... Rod

Sorry about that....my fingers went mad!!! I don't need alot of isolation as I live in the country and don't really have any neighbours that close. I suppose what I am asking is, if I put the 4'x8' sheets of OSB board on the walls instead of 4'x8' sheets of plasterboard, will there be a huge difference? It will also be easier to fix the 1x4, 1x5 and 1x6 lenghts of wood to the face of the OSB board than fixing the wood to plasterboard.. Would there be a big difference in the acoustics if I put the OSB board up instead of the plasterboard? Am I being any clearer?? Thanks again for your help, Paul

Paul, if you attach the boards directly to the face of the wall - the acoustics will be lousy any way you look at it (as if you just had the bare wall) so perhaps you shold explain exactly what you are trying to acheive and then we could help you better. Rod
Rod, I think he is trying to build a slat panel or a slat wall.
Hi Rod, Thanks for your patience.. The room will be a control room, the finish I'm after is like the pictures attached from avatar studios in New York. You know this studio well!! Now I know I cant build the same control room...I don't have the money!!! But what I was hoping to have something similar with the wood slats on the walls.. It's just that I have the sheets of OSB and though I could use them instead of the plasterboard.. Regards, Paul

Ah, yes I do know that room well - as well as the rest of the rooms at Avatar........ OK - I know so much about those rooms and walls that I cannot tell you how they are constructed. BUT - I can tell you that the board are not directly attached to the drywall........ And I can give you a suggestion of how to proceed......... You could use your board instead of drywall seeing as yuo are not interested in isolation. If you haven't framed your walls yet - frame them with 2x6 at 2' centers - then insulate them with fluffy insulation - cover with your material and add strapping out of 2x2's installed parallel to the floor with 24" clearance between the 2x2's. Now install 1 1/2" 703 tight between the 2x2's - covering with a flame retardant cloth - and then the boards. I wuold space the boards 1 1/4 apart on the side walls and 1" apart on the rear wall. I would stop them shy of the corners and install corner broadband treatment there floor to ceiling. I hope that helps. Rod
Hi Rod, Many thanks for the advice, I've attached a pic of the room, its 15' wide between the purlines 19' long x 12' 10" to the highest point. The room is upstairs in my garage. I would like to use downstairs for the live room. Once I put in the floor on top of the exposed joists in the pic, I will frame the walls as you suggested, 2"x6" at 2' centers, then add the insulation. Can I ask, when you say
add strapping out of 2x2's installed parallel to the floor with 24" clearance between the 2x2's.
Do you mean add 2x2's between the 2x6's flush with the front of the 2x6? I've attached a pic - do you mean strapping like on the left or right of the pic? Could I also add more insulation behind the 2x6's? Regards, Paul
