I recently installed a Fantech VHR-1404 HRV in an ongoing studio build. It's providing ventilation to both the control room and a small iso room. I've built 4 silencers and it is all working DEAD silent. Decent airflow and no noise at all at the vents.
The studio is in a detached garage. I live in L.A. and I was secretly hoping that I might be able to get away with out AC and just use the HRV for fresh air. Well I was way off on that one because it's been quite toasty in there with the summer heat!
My original plan was to put the HRV outside in a little shed and then use a mini-split in the control room for cooling. But now after hearing how well my duct work/silencers are performing I was wondering what my options would be to somehow get cold air into the HRV system.
Maybe run hoses from a "portable room" AC into the HRV?? I could also locate the AC unit in the shed.
Maybe utilize my existing HRV system within a "chiller room" concept?
Any other ideas under $1000? preferably way under.
Cold air solution for HRV system

Any words of advice?
I'm working on the same thing in Thousand Oaks, where it is cool at night.
My room is 350sq. ft. with a 7.5' ceiling. very airtight.
I have some ideas, have built some baffle boxes. I'd like to compare your silencers. send me a message w/ phone # and we'll talk.
My Fujitsu 2 ton mini split A/C heat pump will be installed THurs. $ 3500 installed. Could be a good referral, since he also did my buddy's studio.
That is for the hot days.......and attended sessions.
My A/C guy will also try an independent 8" duct loop with an inline fan pushing fresh air at 400cfm thru baffle box to a 12" sq. register right above and behind my head.
Then, a return vent mounted near the mini split to pull cool air (and exhaust regular stale air) into the 10x10 booth. Then the return vent from the booth will have another fan PULLING the air thru the loop and to the outside. One switch for each fan.
My hope is to have a fresh, quiet circulation of air without using so much electricity as the A/C.
BTW, my booth is used only 5-10% of the time.
Any opinions?? Airflow enough?
You can get a large window unit cheap and try to rig up a chiller room but I'd think you'd want more airflow (larger ductwork and inline fan). That Fantech seems expensive for the CFM's.

The fantech isn't the cheapest, but I got a great deal on one on e-bay. I'm not very experienced when it comes to HVAC, but it's easy to spot quality when I see it. I sat the unit on neoprene rubber strips to minimize mechanical noise, and the unit is smooth and quiet. So far I'm happy with it.
All of my duct work is 6".
For silencers, I used space as effeciently as I could and built them into a soffit on the wall that divides my iso room from the control room. Check out the pics.
1- Soffit silencer
2- Fiberglass lined with weed cloth
3- With drywall
The other 2 silencers are between my control room and the outside world. I don't have pics of them on this computer, but they are more "regular" style silencers that are similar to the bottom pic in design. The 2 main differences are that the fins are 7" wide instead of 6" as pictured. The other is that I used 1" rigid fiberglass instead of 2" because I ran out. If I could do it again I would use 2" as it would probably help a bit with bass leaking.
