I'm wondering if using a drop ceiling with ceiling panels is an effective way of bass traping on a ceiling. I was going to install it 6" below the drywall ceiling, and the fill the void with dense insulation.
ceiling panels for bass trapping

Yes and close. If you are going to fill the void, use light insulation. If it is 6" then R19 is the one to use. double check on the R value, but there is a standard home insulation 6" thick. Great, thanks,
Will this give me effectiveness down to 50 hz? How low?
? There is no standardized testing data for that low. 6" will give you flat free field absorption down to 125 Hz, the lowest standard band for testing at a minimum. Extrapolating from test data, I guess you will get usable absorption down to the 80 Hz band. AndreGreat, thanks, Will this give me effectiveness down to 50 hz? How low?
Thanks Avare,
Why do you recommend using lighter insulation. doesn't dense insulation offer better absorption?
Not for the application we are writing about. About the best I have seen on the net writing this is [urlhttp://www.gearslutz.com/board/bass-traps-acoustic-panels-foam-etc/177600-could-someone-help-out-interpreting-materials-gas-flow-properties.html]this thread[/url] with post #29 and its drawings providing a summary.
