Slat Absorber

... Hello, i´ve often seen Studios like this one: http://www.avatarstudios.net/rooms/studio_a.html Are these wood fronts all different discrete cavitys? Or is this rather a main big cavity or possibly even no cavity behind the slats with different spaced or aligned slats mounted? Something like a reflective surface with random absortion. Is there ever a absorption for bass in the front or back? thank you for your thoughts

this is probably a good question for Rod Gervais since he had a hand in building it... my guess would be a series of discrete chambers behind a given set of slats to create a variety of absorber units with good efficiency.
