I am trying to figure out if it is worth the expense of purchasing an acoustic door rated for 51-53 STC, or I can do some savings. The construction of my studio have 2 doors that leading to the outside. The location is in the country away from big issue of noise and the main concern are rain sound, and occasion dog braking etc. The design called for a double door (this is a double wall construction) one door is the standard exterior door and the second one is Acoustic door by IAC. Considering my situation I am trying to figure out if I can get away with 2 standard exterior doors (with Zero Intl' seal) or it is critical to have the acoustic door. Your input is welcome and appreciated.
What is your definition of a standard exterior door? This is a crucial area because it leads outside. I would err on the side of safety and lean towards the rated door on the inside.
standard exterior doors do not have the mass to create enough isolation. acoustic doors from overly start at around $1,500 USD. i'd say your best bet is to use a solid core door, covered with sheet lead, then 3/4 inch plywood and make a double seal with 1 x 2 or 1 x 4 stock lumber and GM truck gasketing (per rod garvias's book). use this as your studio door and leave your standard exterior door alone. this will maintain the level of isolation of a double wall assembly fairly well.
I'm using a double door as well. Like you, I'm fairly rural, but why take chances on a ruined take? Here's my exterior door... Std exterior steel door 2 layers of 1/32" sheet lead 3/4" MDF Because the MDF is susceptible to the elements and it the door still doesn't seem to have enough mass, I'm going to add at least one more layer of 1/32" sheet of lead (possibly two) and 1 layer of 5/8" or 3/4" Plywood. That way I can either paint, stain or cover the surface with a laminate.
