Greetings all, this is my first post and I joined this forum as basically I am intending to build a small personal studio in Melbourne. A little about myself first to give you all some background: As a young sound engineer my main experience thus far has been as a location sound recordist and sound designer for short films, a couple of feature films, T.V.C's, documentaries and such as well as recording friends and bands. I have been getting more and more work where I look after the sound from Pre Production to Post Production including voice-overs, ADR , Editing and Sound Design and some music composition. Anyway, this is why I am going to construct a facility to allow me to do this comfortably on a production by production basis. The studio will be primarily used for post production editing but I want to be able to record vocals for voice over and dialogue replacement as well as vocals, acoustic guitar and other instruments for music recording. I have included some photo's of the raw space I am to be working with and also some quick and VERY basic sketchup graphics of the basic dimensions and proposed layout of the facility. Oh and my goofy looking mates are in the photo's to give a real sense of scale... I guess at this stage what I'm looking for is ideas on how best to layout the studio in a manner that is an effective balance of good acoustic design and ergonomics/aesthetics/ and effective use of the admittedly small space. As you can see from the photo's the walls are constructed of wood paneling and the floor is bare concrete. This small studio is to be constructed within a building/warehouse surrounding it. I can change the basic outlining shape or design, however I must remain within the dimensions shown in the second sketchup image. I should also mention that I want these rooms very well soundproofed to keep noise in and not let it out (I want to minimise disturbance to my colleagues as much as possible). The outer shell of the studio is constructed of Gyprock. I have a budget of around $2000 to $3000 (Australian Dollar) but will undoubtedly spend more as I will be working on this for a few months and in my experience things nearly always cost more than first projections. I have read the forum rules and guidelines but appologise if I am not as experienced or articulate as others with regards to acoustics and studio construction lingo and principles (that's why I'm here!) Any input would be greatly appreciated, no matter how minor. Thanking you in advance, Dane Cody.

what is that sound lock area? can you build something there? maybe square it out and then you can greatly expand the vox booth etc. to get the best shapes
Thanks for the input glen. Unfortunately I cannot square it out as it would intrude into the areas of the warehouse being used by my colleagues. If anyone else has any ideas I'd really appreciate them... my post is getting lonely!
sir, use a floorplan instead of a 3d sketch (you can always use that later). That'll be much easier to read and to comment on. But, you've gotta do your homework (by reading some more) After updating yourself you'll sure come up with a brill design (of your own). Come on, be creative! Everyone can play guitar....
Thanks for the suggestions Ro. I'll update the post. Also, I've since bought some acoustic design and construction books and intend to get a bit more pro-active about the whole thing.
