hey guys
I have been watching this site for a while now, I have spent a while searching the site and cant find anything relating directly to what im trying to do
I will be moving to a new place in the next few weeks or so, in north Hampshire, England. there is a garage in front of the premises, I have sorted most all the answers I need for building a studio in the garage space, but there is a steel door on the front of the garage. I don't want to go down the route of planning permission just yet, so I cant just brick up the door space.
can I get some suggestions as to the best way to sound proof the door area, leaving the old steel door in place and rendering it useless. I have considered building a wall inside the door, then sound proofing from there.
does this sound the best way or can some one suggest a better way
sorry i have no pics or specs yet but ill be glad to post them as i go :)

you might not need planning permission or even a building warrant. check with your council surveyors.
building the interior wall is probably your best bet although its convenient to be able to open the garage door and have a door inside to move equipment in and out.
Hi Chris, or should I say neighbour?
I agree with what electrasoul and Glenn have said already, however, there might be a change of use issue, converting to a habitable space means planning and building control etc, (if you want no potential problems down the road). Also, I bet that's a single brick construction yuo're refering to, (no cavity - blah blah). Get your 'waterseal' and 'synthaproof' brushes ready!
Any chance of pics, details, dimensions etc?
I understand you're not even in there yet but, if you could provide that info, it would give you a massive head start from up here!
Best of luck with your build mate, anytime you want to chat or view, or have a beer before you embark on this, let me know. I've been there, done it, read the tee-shirt and swallowed the pie!
Kind regards,

Hmm I think I need to put a bit more thought and planning in to this.
thanks guys for your comments, After spending more time reading through the forums here and your answers, its more than clear, the amount of money im about to spend I might as well do it right from the beginning and not go cutting corners.
Lou, I have been watching your build for a while now and it looks awesome from the pictures. bet your chuffed with what you have built. Thank you for the offer, im sure ill be asking loads of questions as i go :)
I will put some pics up when im getting ready to start. along with specs and designs and yes it is a simple single skin detached garage. basically its around 20 ft long by 11 ft wide by almost 9 ft tall, on a concrete base, with a new flat roof. so there should be plenty of room for insulation/soundproofing.
