Hi,
This may seem like a silly question but, in a studio, what are the advantages of having a separate control room? Does anyone think that having the desk etc. integrated into the "live" room would be benificial to the sound production and communication between Engineer and Performer?

In a separate room setup it's way easier to actually HEAR what the mics pick up without having the source noise get in the way.
Good point but do you think that the engineer (if they could actually get some quiet) could listen to this between takes?
Sure that's posible but not very handy doin' realtime signal adjustement (peak correction etc)
I have always been a studio live room vocal booth live area man now I have had to change while i sort out my studio and I am using 1 area its great the communication is ace and the performers get there own headphone mix well 4 separate ones available. also using a load of modeling stuff and kit with shell pack triggers and real cymbals.
I use a reflection filter while tracking vocals which rocks and have treated one corner of the room where I record vocals.
I even give the hangers on a mix of what I am listening to which keeps the vibe going.
This has sold me plus the space thing is an issue my space is only 15 foot by 16 foot.
