Hi there, ok, my studios foundation has been thrown and i want to start planning ahead, the interior space im going to have available is +- 13.4m by 5m by 3m height, i am going to be dividing the spaces up into a live room a control room and a vocal booth, i like the sonar design on this site and think it would fit perfectly in my available space, my questions are as follows:
The building will be constructed from a double brick wall (pic of the bricks attached) the bricks have air pockets inside as you can see, would this be ideal? should we fill the air pockets of the bricks with crusher sand at every third layer of bricks? the builder suggests we put think pink aerolite (pink stuff) between the double walls aswell. would you suggest this method? is the pink stuff usefull with sound isolation i would think that it is more for heat insulation?
my plan was to build a plain double wall and then put drywalling against the brick wall on the inside with a layer of rockwool between the drywalling and brick wall to help with the sound isolation as there will be alot of drums and loud guitar amps being recorded at the studio. rockwool is expensive would pink aerolite be as effective as rockwool as its cheaper and would it be better to place the rockwool or pink stuff here than between the double wall?
second question is at what angle should i idealy splay my control room walls? would 4m in front and meeting up at 6m at the back of the room be angled enough as seen on the sonar studios plan? please help me out guys im no building guru and not familiar with all of the terms on this site?
Ive read the READ THIS BEFORE POSTING and im sure ive asked the questions correctly this time, could you guys please help me with my build i would love it to be a process that everyone can have input in and share ideas on i would also like to post the building process on the site as its quite a big project......
any info needed please just ask
Thanks in advance

heres a pic to explain what i mean with the wall a little clearer, what would work the best for that question?
correction, my interior space available is 13m by 5m by 3m height.
The drawing on the right is better.
Andre
i read in rods book, the control room should idealy be rectangular if im not mistaken, the sonar designs control room has splayed walls and im basing my design on it, would this not be too much of a problem?
This thread sums it up about as well any regarding splayed surfaces in studios.
Andre
Thanks for your replies Andre, i would just like to confirm with you on my walls, you said the one on the right is better, would this be a two leaf system? how would you suggest i go about with my walls with the material i am using, the bricks as you can see have air pockets, is this ok?
Yes it would be a two leaf system. The wall on the left is a three leaf system.
I am not clear on what you are asking. If you are asking if it is acceptable to leave the blocks hollow, without knowing you isolation requirements exactly, the answer is yes. Andrehow would you suggest i go about with my walls with the material i am using, the bricks as you can see have air pockets, is this ok?
thanks again, my isolation requirements are as follows, i will be recording alot of drums and rock guitar amps so more i can get the better my neighbours are about 10 meters away from my building., they r loading the bricks off as we speak, the bricks weigh 9kg each! i think the air pockets in the bricks are to my advantage and can act as the air spring.
so then i have now decided to build the walls as follows like in the pic to the right, brick-brick-pink stuff or rockwool-drywall
with the available space i have of 13m by 5m by 3m height would you continue working with the dimensions of the sonar studio or could you recommend any other sizes for the control room, live room and vocal booth, my most important rooms will be the control and live rooms. do you think my space available should be adequite
The cavities as springs are a negative, not a plus. With double layers of block attached to one another, the decrease due to the cavities is not significant.
The Sonar design concept is fine for your application.
Succinctly,
Andre
ok thanks, as long as the cavities in the bricks dont create a problem, then i am happy.
Il take some pics and post them as the build progresses
