hey guys this is a great resource i am so glad i found it..i rent a 3 bdr house in atlanta ga with a garage, i play in two bands and have decided to try to start a project studio, went to school at UGA and with the great music scene in athens/ atlanta i feel i'd like to take a stab at starting a project studio in my garage..my budget is $10,000 - $15,000 max..now you may have noticed i said i RENT, i am assuming that means i have no right to build walls in my garage,..anyway to get around this?..i know the owners very well and have told them about my plans however i feel like they just thought that i would be having band practice in there :) i said to them "i'm thinking of using the garage to produce music in" they said they were fine with it, again should i go ahead with planning or should i stop everything, move and buy a house, i mean i realize that putting money into something i dont own is somewhat counter-intuitive, but i love where i'm at, its a great location and near work, friends, etc..im doing this simply for the love of music, not really worried about making money from the studio however i'd like to? another thing is the building code..i am assuming the owner would have to sign on it? i am 25 years old (but educated) so a lot of this is new to me, not the music part , but building, construction etc..ANY advice would be wonderful..thanks again hope yall are all well'

Fiscally irresponsible ;) I am currently unemployed and am looking for work. Your not too far away, maybe we could work something out?...something i dont own is somewhat counter-intuitive
thanks for the sarcasm..i dont see why someone can't just make a suggestion as opposed to being rude..just so you know i talked to my the owners, they are fine with it..and i have they are signing off on the building permit...so i am doing this either way..because i want to..and i am not fiscally irresponsible..takes a real genius for an unemployed person to call me fiscally irresponsible..nor am i a slack when it comes to production, my computer science and math degree help out a lot in the studio, anyway i have a job developing websites..if i ever need someone to cut my lawn i'll give you a call..and if i lost the whole 10,000 bucks just to even try to do something i want to do it wouldnt bother me a bit..life is too short to even respond to people like you..i feel sorry for you..i thought i could ask some questions being new to studio construction and what not without having to be subjected to "newbie" ridicule....it's true that you'll never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the general public..
I would have thought you would see the humor in that. I used a smiley and everything!
But since you did not, maybe you will see the humor in this:

i really do need someone to cut my lawn, think you'd be perfect....there's not humor in that
i think you should build something like this:
Based on what I know about the garage, it is a perfect fit ;)
Glenn,
nice design!!! It looks like it might come in over budget though :)
What are your thoughts?

Why the anger? Xspace is a well respected member of this community, and your comments are a bit overboard. Lighten up a bit, life is too short.
My advice: Don't build in a rental property. Trust me, you don't want to do this twice, and not just for the financial outlay. To do it right takes lots of time, effort, and emotions, way beyond any fiscal outlay. I am just finishing my project, and I don't want to even think about doing this again for a long, long time.
Hey bro,
Right now, you naivete is showing a little- that's why the guys seem to be giving you a hard time.
I can appreciate your enthusiam so I'll give you a respectable reply.
It would be foolish to invest that amount of money into a place you don't even own. And you would be foolish to tihnk that you could build a studio for that amount of money. Try adding 10 grand to that figure. Your landlord has no obligation to continue renting to you after you build the place. Get my drift?
I would hate for this to be an expensive life lesson for you.
If I was your father, I would recommend putting that money down on a house. Once you have a house, you can do anything with it.
We can't even begin to offer advice since you're jumping right out of the gate thinking irrationally. Hence the sarcasm in response.
If you want to learn about building a studio- every phase of it- you've come to the right place. No one will be able to give you all the information you need in a couple posts, though. But- the information is all here. You have months of reading and research to do, however. Consider this a course in "studio building 101". It's an 8 week course and it requires a lot of reading. Don't bother asking questions- they've already been answered- trust me. Read through all the studio build threads.
One last piece of advice- if you want to search on a topic, search on google and include the word "sayers". for example "garage studio sayers". That way you'll be led back to a post here.
Take your time and good luck.
Just to show of my mighty Google-voodoo: Include "site:johnlsayers.com" in the search terms, like "garage studio site:johnlsayers.com" to limit the search. But keep in mind that Googles indexing might lag behind so for the freshest posts use the forum search function set to "search for all terms".One last piece of advice- if you want to search on a topic, search on google and include the word "sayers". for example "garage studio sayers". you might be able to do it for 10k. who cares about the money right? but it might also take you 3 years like mine is taking. do you really want to invest so much time and work in something you don't own?
it's bad enough for me, i own but my wife is always looking at those real estate listings. i keep telling her, we aren't moving until the studio is finished for at least as long as it took me to build it. but she doesnt' listen.
I,m sure this guy is long gone by now. But I cant understand how sarcasm can be taken as rude?? As well I didnt see any harm in the comments, Being a newbie its not unusual to sound stupid.
Also if your renting a property.....your asking for trouble, if you even wanna try and do something studio like.
Chuck-Lin
And to make matters worse, I have an interview Monday with a prominent builder so if all goes well, I'll be off the market.
Best of luck!!!And to make matters worse, I have an interview Monday with a prominent builder so if all goes well, I'll be off the market.
Thank you very much James...if the interview requires a closer, I have printed your comment and high-lighted the "respectable" part :)
