Hello everyone,
I found these great forums few days ago & it's a gold mine for someone like me who start a project.
So, i decided to ask your advises regarding the following:
I decided to start building a studio (control room, rec room, machine room & the HVAC room) for the start.
I am looking for the best solution to keep the outside light. I'm aware that windows & studios are not going much together but this case is special. As it's a big Barge (canal boat) & i have no problem if the sound leaks out.
Also, it would be a shame to loose that great view i have from inside and it will add some originality to the place.
So please let me know how you guys would place the walls in there.
The sketchup file can be grabbed here:
http://download.yousendit.com/76664C0939869B26
All the area that can be used for the project is shown in red.
As you see, i have some restrictions:
- it's the lower floor of the barge. That means the stairs you see is the main entrance.
- There is a lot of metallic part a bit everywhere. Like the metallic structures & the main metallic wall in the middle. This metallic wall can be a great separationbetween the control room & the rec room. But the best place for the rec room is where the ceiling is the highest(339cm) but i will have an emptu place in between.
- One last detail, as it's the lowest floor of a barge, i have an empty space of 70cm under the wooden ATM floor. That might complicate things with resonances. I hope i'm wrong...
So every good idea is welcomed & much appreciated. Sorry for the windows i couldn't intersect properly with the walls. But it give you a clear idea of where they are placed.
Attachements : 2D & 3D projects.
Studio Project on Barge

Not much I can help with, except Dave Gilmour has a studio on a houseboat which I read about here:

Gareth thanks for the link. I 'm aware of Guilmour's Astoria project & you can see more pics here :

I hope someone can help me with placing different rooms & if the fact of keeping the windows untreated is an good idea or not. Even if i have to place panels in front of each when needed.
Hopefully the Astoria's video is still online here:

You can have a much better idea of his place. Which is built on a platform.
Mine is inside a Barge. I wil post some pics from the outside to let you guys have a better idea of the place.
i think you'll want to treat the walls and windows for isolation purposes - if nothing else - sound intruding into your space. so it should be possible to keep a bunch of the windows but expect to add a layer to ensure isolation needs are met. otherwise it sounds like a very cool project.
are the stairs the main entryway into the space? is there another? this way if you decide the live rooms should be near the stairs, the folks in the CR (near the bow? bow lounge?) you'd have access without having to go through the live space (if needed).
Thanks for your reply Gullfo, I didn't mention that, but there is an insulation in the existing 7"/18cm walls. But it's a normal housing insulation. Regarding the coming noise, i have nothing much coming in. It's very quite place :D In case of a boat passing in front, i here it for sure, but it's not often. I will do it some day but prefer to keep my budget for the inside walls construction 1st. The stairs are the main entrance and that's my main problem, because people will have to walk through the Live room to get into the CR. I can add some sort of corridor to the CR but that will eat lots of place of the Live room. Something like 10m². On the other hand a corridor has another good side which is that will isolate a eventual outside noise. something like that ?i think you'll want to treat the walls and windows for isolation purposes - if nothing else - sound intruding into your space. so it should be possible to keep a bunch of the windows but expect to add a layer to ensure isolation needs are met. otherwise it sounds like a very cool project. are the stairs the main entryway into the space? is there another? this way if you decide the live rooms should be near the stairs, the folks in the CR (near the bow? bow lounge?) you'd have access without having to go through the live space (if needed).
FPR,
Friggin you tube. Just lost an hour of my day I will never get back.
What a cool video and cool studio.
Looks like yours will be a great studio when your finished
Peace
Tom
Hehe, nice huh? Unfortunetly, i don't have the same budget than Mr Guilmour but i'll do my best. I'm still not satisfied with my ATM layouts. But still working on it. I also have another solution : using the upper floor. I have near 100m² free up there that can be used for the project. The good part is that there is footbridge serving different rooms & that will ease a lot of things. Building corridors will take a lot of time & cost much. I'll let you guys know...FPR, Friggin you tube. Just lost an hour of my day I will never get back. What a cool video and cool studio.
