Hello everyone! I am converting our basement to habitable space and a home studio. It will be used primarily to record drums and mix in "living stereo"! I have attached a pic that shows the dimensions of the space and a general idea of where some things will go. Scale of the furniture and drum set are a little small, the room isn't quite as roomy as this pic makes it look. The air conditioner (Mini-Split represented by the black bar) is installed. The A/C is the only thing currently in the room. The walls are drywall (2 layers on walls, 3 layers on ceiling, both with green glue). I salvaged a bunch of old siding and plan to use it, unpainted-side-out, on the wall behind the monitors (as the pic shows) or maybe somewhere behind the drums. Floors are cement. I will lay an area rug under the drums and mount clouds over the mix position. My main concern at the moment is a proposed bass trap soffit (represented by the big white area) on the wall-ceiling corners around the perimeter of the larger half of the room, but I will be thrilled to hear any and all words of wisdom. I'm focusing on the soffit right now because I have an agreement with a contractor who will build it within the next month or so. He's also installing recessed lights in the soffit - cool! The idea is that he will build a simple frame for the soffit that will accept rigid fiberglass panels. I will buy or build and mount more bass traps and panels after that, for the rest of the walls, corners and ceiling. Thanks to the moderators and frequent contributors for making this excellent forum a wonderful place!! --- Again, any and all comments, ideas, tips or links would be immensely appreciated... Is the soffit a good idea to take care of some bass trapping? Any pitfalls I should be aware of before proceeding? What should the dimensions of the soffit be? I was thinking maybe about 12 inches down from the ceiling and about 14 or 16 inches out from the wall. Will the soffit have any detrimental effect on the sound isolation of the green glued drywall? Our bedroom is above this basement and the bed is directly above the soffited area. Will the bass trap soffits increase the amount of bass that my wife will hear/feel above me?

if the soffit is for supporting porous absorption treatments, then it shouldn't have a significant negative effect on your ceiling isolation - unless the soffit construction adds resonances and penetrates the ceiling - that said, it won't necessarily reduce how much sound is making it into the bedroom - however it should reduce overall sound levels in the room so it should help in that regard.
Thanks Glenn!
