Hey everybody. My name's Jason and I am new to posting here even though I have been lurking the past few weeks trying to learn as much as I can from you guys, which I will admit has been awesomely helpful. So with that I want to thank everyone that takes their time to help out people like me on here!!! Ok.. After coming here I realized how awfully set up my home studio is so I started researching what to do.. After pouring over this and other forums I think I have decided on my layout but have a few questions. I'll post a quick image as well as the .pdf. I will be using this room for tracking all instuments as well as mixing what I record. So far I have purchased enough JM 814 to make (6) 2X4X2" traps and plan on purchasing more to make some tri corner traps as well. 2 of the traps will be on stands because of the doorway and window. First off, my room is pretty asymmetrical and I am curious what effect having the entryway "cubby" and bathroom will have on the acoustics. I am not sure if I should cover the doorways or place more traps in them or what? Second, is it ok to use Auralex acoustic foam behind the monitors and at the other early reflection points (sides and ceiling) or is it better to buy more 814 and build 2" thick traps to place there? Also, I have the two windows on one side as well as the tall window in the bathroom I have to contend with.. I was wondering that since there is a 6 inch gap in the windowsill if I could just stuff it with bagged fiberglass or thick rugs while I am mixing.. So that's about it, if anyone spots anything blatantly wrong with my design let me know and once again thanks for any help!!

Your drawing shows 4 inches thick, which is what you really need. So hopefully 2" is just a typo. I'd also add more bass traps in ceiling corners.

Lack of symmetry behind you is not necessarily a problem.

The front wall is not a particularly important place to treat IMO since your speakers don't face that way.

Sure. --Ethan
Hey thanks alot! Yeah, 2" was a typo. I am building the bass traps tonight and they will definitely be 4" thick. I am going to be buying material to make more traps for the wall/ceiling corners per your suggestion as well. While I'm doing that, does is make sense to build similar traps to place over the plywood and mix position or should I use thinner perhaps more reflective traps?
Yes, absorption over the recording area is useful. Two inches thick is enough though four inches is better, and it should be fully absorbent. --Ethan
OK.. so Im a little late posting but I ended up making four 4' X 2' x 4" bass traps for the corners and two 2' X 2' X 2" traps for a couple tri-corners as well as four 4' X 2' X 2" panels for the ceiling. I had some Auralex 1' by 1' by 2" foam panels that I used to treat some early reflection points until I build more panels to replace them. Here are some pics... I also took some pics during the bass trap construction that I could post if anyone is curious... I know my desk is far too small so next build is going to be a new desk that can accomodate my interface, monitors, screens, and midi controller better.

I forgot to add.. I ended up pushin my desk back so the mix position fell right at that 38% spot instead of up further as my drawings showed and I was surprised at how much better it really sounded.
thaz cool, bang!
Does the box of "Fresh Step®" under the right rear wall corner bass trap >really< help with LF absorption :)?

It really knocks out that buildup at 125 8) and it keeps the kitties happy.
