Vertical or horizontal installation of mid/high freq panels?

I've seen tons of photos showing panels installed vertically. Is there an advantage in doing that than having them installed horizontally at ear level throughout the room? Also, for mid/high freq panels, is the air gap imperative? Couldn't I just mount it flush against the wall and get the same mid/high freq absorption?

If 2x4 panels are vertical you can sit up tall and slouch down low and not get reflections. If they're horizontal you can lean forward and back more. The best solution is two panels side by side to cover a 4x4 foot area.

A gap extends the absorption to lower frequencies which is always useful. But a 2-inch panel with no gap works well enough. --Ethan
Thanks! Are these OC panels exactly 2' x 4'? I'm wondering if 4x4 panels would be too big for my home studio - 13' x 12'. I'm wondering if 2x2 panels would do the trick for me. Granted, I wouldn't be able to move much when mixing, but I'm not sure how big of a problem that would really be. Opinions?
4x4 is not too large, and in fact that's what I suggest. --Ethan

Thanks, Ethan! I'm just trying to keep costs down. This will be a mix room only. I don't plan on recording any live instruments. Now that you know the purpose of the room, does that change your opinion at all? My apologies for being such a newb
