Hey John and folks, I have an Ideal space for my studio. It is a 2 story barn. The ground floor will be my studio. Ceilings are 9' walls are double studs (8" thick). The room is fairly isolated.
Location: Corona, Ca U.S.A
I'm not sure what parts of the space to use for control etc.. I
I figured the room with the windows as the live room and vocal booth
check out my poor attempt at a sketchup drawing.
Many Thanks
Jim

Hi
Are these all exsisting walls? and if so is there any room for alteration?
Cheers
Alan
Yes the outer walls and the stair walls are set. The middle wall , however is not really there(only 6 foot portions left side and right side). There is a beam there now with posts holding it up. So , yes, the middle wall can altered. but the outer walls can not. Keep in mind, the beam still needs posts or a wall to support it.
Cheers :D

Hi
Here's the first idea, maybe you can mess about with it.
If you post a drawing with the position of the posts and what can and can't be moved it would also help.
Plus try and answer these questions in as much detail as you can as this will help with the layout decisions.
What kind of music do you record?
How many people do you want to record in the live room?
How many people do you usually have in the control room?
How much equipment has to go in the control room?
What is the main priority of the studio?
Plus any other info you think is relevant to your build.
If you can give as much info from your side as possible you will find a lot more people on the site to help you in your pursuit.
Good luck wit hthe design
Cheers
Alan
Heres a revised skp. Thanks for all the input. I record rock n roll , electronic dance. I do alot of acoustic guitar recording. I want to have a nice view of both the live room and the vocal booth. The live room will have drums and a couple of amps.
I would like to be able to accommodate a 4 piece band in the live room. The control room will be my haven, where I do most of my electronic recording. I have a 24 channel console couple of racks worth of gear. I have not yet bought my monitors for the studio. I will spend alot of time in the control room. would really like to have some natural light in there. I can also use rooms upstairs for amp rooms.
Structural supplies I will not have to buy. I have a lot of lumber and metal studs here. My budget is around $3000 on a good day
snappers studio looked very similar to my space and what I may be looking for.. I dont know

I really like the design posted previously in this post. Is there an advantage to making the control room deeper vs wide?
Cheers

P.S. I keep getting better with sketchup, So I keep updating my model. This will be the last update of the raw space I think
Im having trouble fitting the arrangement I want into the space. I have decided to keep 1 post under the existing beam . I believe I can work around it with any design.
My main concerns are to be able to have eve contact with the live room and other room( vox / Iso).
Also the windows / doorways in the building are all subject to being moved or taken out
I really like the design posted by medboyle...thats just what I had intended with the exception of the way the control room was facing.
Ceilings are just shy of 9'
With the open space, I'm up for any ideas!
I am drawing a blank every time I try and re design.. :(
Thanks All
Jim
maybe something like this? or turn the CR to face the iso booth and have a bigger door from the CR into the live room.
Finally have the cash and am ready to start my project. I have taken the ideas of many and was satisfied with this layout. It satisfies my visual needs as well as the buildings existing structural needs.
This drawing is just put together. I am still nort sure of what treatments to use for my control room and live room/vocal room. I probably will not have enough in the budget for fancy slat resonators , but who knows.
My intent at the moment is getting isolated. after spend alot of time in the room , I realize it needs serious iso treatment from outside noise.
mostly trucks and sub bass from car stereos, and birds and just about everything lol.
I will be using roxul insulation for all of my insulation needs. But I do have an abundance of the fluffy yellow stuff that I hate to waste.
oh well my pictures are in reverse order , will fix next post
more pics of existing mess
