I've been a proud reader of these forums for a while and now I'm stuck and can't come up with any plans for my own studio. My Plans I'm planning on building a studio in my garage. But i'm not going to use the whole thing. Instead, so the garage can still be used, I plan on building a 10'x15' room and going from their. I would like a decent sized vocal booth maybe big enough to stick a drum set in their once in a while. I was thinking 5'x10'. The Garage The garage itself consists of level concrete floors, the east and west walls are concrete. The south wall is drywall and the north wall is the garage door. What I Need In The Studio I have a 3'x6.5' sofa that I need in the control room. I own 2 pianos which will need placement also. As far as budget, really I'm only concerned with the construction of the studio. All other problems are already resolved. I just need to come up with some plans. I dont want to beat around the bush with whats need for construction. I started to do a layout but i came across some problems with the placement of the door for the booth and bass traps for the walls behind the sofa because of the doors. I'm open to any suggestions or layouts. I just want something functional and nice. Maybe a couple slot resonators. I'm not really sure what I need construction wise. Thanks

Hi, Do you mean Full scale pianos or Stages pianos/Keyboards ? Thanks
i'm sorry, I mean keyboards. A yamaha motif and a korg triton. Also I plan on building the workstation myself. thanks
Im no expert but I don't think a 10 by 10 square is ideal for a control room. What height are the ceilings? You could maybe borrow some idea's fron Dan Scott's Control Room for a layout with keyboards here's the link the pic is halfway down the page http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9584&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=45 The best Room ratio's are: L.W. Sepmeyer Height Width Length 1.00 1.14 1.39 9’6” x 10’8” x 13’2” 1.00 1.28 1.54 1.00 1.60 2.33 M.M. Louden Height Width Length 1.00 1.40 1.90 9’6” x 13’3” x 18’ 1.00 1.30 1.90 1.00 1.50 2.10 Cheers Alan
being that 8' is the highest i can go what do these ratios look like. 8'2" x 9'3" x 11'2" ok?
As i said I'm no expert but they look ok to me, hopefully Kendale or Gullfo will be around soon. The have the knowledge. I'll try a sketch up to see if it helps any. Did you plan to soffit mount your speakers or put them on stands? Cheers Alan
something like that would be perfect. and yes, i want to sofit mount my monitors. Probably my HR824's and have my yamahas on the workstation. but only a few minor changes are needed. I circled in the first pic where the door should go. In the second, i circled where a window for the booth would go and in the third the entrance to the booth. I'm not a bid fan of sliding doors. I've had a couple bad experiences in studios with them. :D I've been trying to figure Sketch Up and i cant get a square amde on that thing :(. How can I make that sketch up file and make like into a blueprint?

I'm at work just now but i'll post a blank sketch up of the room when i get, home. I've had another couple of idea's and will check them out as well. Cheers Alan

wow that looks great. what materials go where? and what size framing is that divides the booth and the CR? thanks alot :D
I tjink i made it 70mm. What you cover the wall with is dependant on the level of isolation you require, You could do Inside out wall with the inside of the studio covered with cloth. If you do a search for inside out walls you should find some good info. I would prefer if someone with a little more know how than me to give you an absolute on the set up but based on my knowledge(limited) I'd have slats to the left and right of the mix position, some kind of rear wall absorbers, clouds on the ceiling above the mix position and a absorber between the soffits. Another good post to look at is kendale http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4091&highlight= It has very good pictures of the room developing Cheers Alan
nice work Alan! read up engi to learn about how to fill in the blanks regarding isolation, acoustic treatments, and the whole host of construction tips needed to max out your investment in materials and time.
