Hi, I`m in the middle of designing a small studio 23 ft x15ft and my main monitors are genelec 1029a`s I was cosidering the use of a Genelec bass unit to compliment the 1029`s is it correct to soffit mount the 1029`s and if so where would the best position for the bass unit be ? or are the 1029`s free standing only??
It should be fine to soffit mount the 1029A. The bass tilt should be set to the -6dB position. You might need to play with the sub position to avoid strong coupling with the room modes. But generally the sub should be placed in the center, and as close to the monitors as possible. Thomas

I've often heard not to put the sub in the center position(center of the adjascent walls) to avoid phase and nodes problems! Please explain me why in the center. :?
I guess because the bass instruments in songs are usually mixed in the middle of the stereo field (bass and kick), so you'd probably want to hear them that way when mixing too...but that's only my opinion...Hope it helps..
Thanks for the feedback guys..(no pun intended) im sorta new to this studio malarky!! so please bare with me. I did have a small project studio in my last property and acheived some nice mixes on the 1029`s I like the way they sound, but adding the sub bass unit makes me think Im gonna need, bass traps and sutch!! my new property as land to the side where I can acheive a 23ft x 15\16 ft .studio split into CR and live room Would the 1029`s +bass unit be enough as main monitors and what sort of volumes should I be working with?? Im use to workng at low levels and checking out the Bottom end on headphones! am I right or wrong in thinking the bass unit will change the sound I am use to??
That's a pleasure to give some replies on this subject but my question remains: why put sub in the center when it is supposed to bring unwanted nodes? Please barefoot, give me a light on this! Thanks :?

So, the center is the best place from a phase/crossover perspective. Depending on the shape of your room, it may or may not be a good position from a modal perspective. You need to do some experimentation to find the best compromise. Just try to keep the sub as centered as possible. Thomas
That makes sense Thanks for the reply :)

Thanks for the reply Barefoot! the CR I intend to build, will be somewhere in the region of 13x11x8\9 ft I dont tend to mix at high levels,do you think in a CR this size a sub is needed ? I feel the 1029`s seem a tad bass light and thought the sub would help or would it open another can of worms? I would value your opinion on this mate!!

I'm not Thomas, but high levels = need sub is not really a useful equation- you can either hear the bottom couple of octaves, or you can't! If that ceiling height is flexible, you're going to want to do some modal calculations before you finalize it- it'll help a great deal when you put it all together. So, with the 1029's I'd probably prefer a sub, as you're missing at least an octave and a half or so down there. You could probably do worse than the Genelec sub that's made for them, but more important than the brand of sub is going to be setting it up right. The alternative is just finding a set of headphones that you trust in the bottom end and using them to make sure that the bottom is balanced.

Thomas, I have started a thread in StudioDesign. I want to build a new studio and i'm now looking for the right size control room. I have 1029a's + 7050 sub and want so soffit the 1029's. If the control room is 4mx6m is that OK?, or are the 1029's to small? May be in the future it wil be bigger ones, but not now. If i can soffit them, what is them the ideal distance from listening positon to speaker? If a make a quick drawing with a 4m x 6m room the distance between listening pos and speaker will be aprox 2.5m is that not to much?? thx, Jeroen
please, somebody??
bump
2.5m seems a little far for such a small speaker on it's own, but if you use a sub/crossover and limit the low frequency extension of the 1029's, you should be able to get decent output levels. Thomas
