Hi to everyone!
Firstly thanks to John for creating this invaluable community, and for taking the time to help people out. Also respect to the seasoned Pros and members who routinely answer questions here.
Having explored the studio design / construction areas of many other forums I am still amazed by the shear wealth of information contained within these pages. I had intended to create a thread elsewhere but have now decided to post the plan / build here as it develops.
A little background on myself: I am an audio engineer, writer / producer of electronic music and former commercial studio manager.
In preparation for this project I have read as much freely available info on acoustics and treatment as possible. On the advice of many here I have ordered Rod Gervais' book (which I cannot wait to receive). I also downloaded Sketchup tonight which I'll spend some time learning over the next few days.
The goal of this project is to convert a detached brick building, (rented & formerly used for storage) into an environment for writing, producing and mixing electronic music. The building will also house an office and wc. The landlord is currently clearing the building, installing the toilet and adding an extra wall with door (see pics). All being well we should be in by the end of February.
Isolation is not a problem as our immediate neighbour is a recording studio housed within a nuclear bunker, the nearest house is far enough away not to be disturbed (will confirm this with an SPL meter) and we back onto a large quarry. Therefore I will only be treating not isolating the space. However we have another neighbour which is a large mobile phone transmitter! Before I commit to renting the space I will take equipment in to test for interference (it has never been a problem next door).
The budget for acoustic treatment is £1000 ($2000 US) although I could (and will inevitably have to) stretch to £1500.
The basic measurements of the room are Length 23' (7.01m), Width 18.7' (5.7m) and Height 8' (2.44m)
Here are some pictures of the space in it's current state. I will continue in another post due to attachment restrictions.....

I have put the dimensions into Realtraps Modecalc (see attachments).

Although the room does not have one of the recommended ratios I believe it can be treated in order to create a good mix environment. If anyone thinks otherwise then please let me know.
I'm off to learn Sketchup, my first project will be to produce a sketch of the empty room including the as yet un-built main and toilet doors. Once this is done I will post my ideas for acoustic treatment and work on a preliminary design in Sketchup.
If I have broken any rules or left out any key info at this stage then gimme the nod and i'll rectify it.
Looking forward to getting some basic designs done and hearing some of your opinions.
with some low frequencies, you'll probably want some panel traps in the corners behind some porous absorption to provide bass trapping and reduce the reverberation time. put the panel absorbers (a mix of low and mid-low units on mode locations) on the existing walls, maybe build the porous absorbers as a number of 4'x8' wall panels and then add some overhead absorbers as clouds. i'd probably add a inside door by the big opening.
Thanks so much for your suggestions and work with drawings Glenn. I really appreciate it.
Don't really have time to post right now as I am busy with work. Hopefully I will get a Sketchup drawing of the space later on when I will have time time to fully digest and discuss your ideas.
Thanks again.
