Hi
I have a new space and i would like to make a nice studio place out of it .
My problem is that the ceiling is pretty low right now and i have to treat it right.I have this idea about the ceiling which is to install 10 or 20 cm rock wool or mineral wool on the ceiling between the 30cm joists and cover it with the fabric . In that case ill end up with 230 cm high ceiling which is treated and hopefully not over treated . I might even wrap the rock wool in some plastic bags before i put fabric just to keep so mid highs freq..... And of course a lot of self made bass traps all around . What do you think about this way of treating the low ceiling ???
Thank you very much for your input
low ceiling treatment

'bout all you can do - ONE of the two parallel surfaces should usually be absorbent, and carpet SUCKS for uniform frequency absorption... Steve
So , thats ok in your opinion Steve ,right?
-Should i use 10 cm or 20 cm rock/mineral wool ?
-Should i wrap the insulation in the plastic bags or not ?
- What should i expect ,is it going to sound OK ?
-Any potential problems with this idea ?
-What kind of fabric should i use ?
-Any other better ideas ?
Thank you very much
I think it's a good plan. The thicker the absorptive material, the lower the frequency to which it will absorb. Thicker is probably better if you can afford it. Also, I'd space it flush with the bottom of the joists, ie, leave an airgap between the insulation and the top of the ceiling. This will also increase the frequencies to which it absorbs. As far as plastic bags, you can do that if you are worried about this treatment making the room too dead. Though I do recommend leaving certain useful parts of the room fully absorptive, ie, a cloud above the mix position (to absorb first reflections), as well as above any choice recording spots (ie, above where you will be recording drum kits, acoustic guitars, vocals, etc). If you add the plastic it will start to reflect some highs, and it could possibly increase bass absorption a bit depending. Any fabric that is breatheable will work. A lot of people like Guilford of Maine fabric, it's sort of the industry standard. Expensive, but quite nice.So , thats ok in your opinion Steve ,right? -Should i use 10 cm or 20 cm rock/mineral wool ? -Should i wrap the insulation in the plastic bags or not ? - What should i expect ,is it going to sound OK ? -Any potential problems with this idea ? -What kind of fabric should i use ? -Any other better ideas ?
