This is my first post (cry for help), but I have enjoyed reading the endless knowledge on this forum. I am converting some excess office space into a studio. The dimensions are not ideal, but it is what i have to work with. I basically have two rooms, the small one would be used as a control room, and the bigger one a tracking room. I am at a loss for ideas due to the unusual size of the tracking area, i have attached a sketchup drawing i made to give an idea. The empty square beneath the room represents stairs, the door at the top of the stairs, and the wall to the left, has not yet been framed. I am open to all ideas, and would like to keep the tracking area as large as possible. Please no advice like build somewhere else, this is the only spot i have. Thanks in advance. Chris Located in Los Angeles Budget under $5000. i already own lots of supplies not included in budget. Lighting dimmers, acoustic doors. soundproofing etc. Mainly looking for ideas as far a possible shapes in the room, and placement of soundproofing. as far as dimensions the sketchup file is to scale.

just read the read this before posting tab. maybe that's why no responses. i have updated the need information. help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. thanks, chris
i'd just frame in the openings you don't need - to seal the rooms - then add a layer of drywall all around to increase the mass of the walls. ensure insulation is in all the walls (if possible), and build some porous absorbers to break up the wall surfaces in the live room, and treat first reflection points in the control room. depending on your needs, the small section above the bigger room could become an air lock/iso booth.
Maybe posting a 2d sketch will help

thanks a bunch for drawing that up. great idea. i am also curious about using plexiglass as opposed to real glass, and how thick it should be. any opinions/suggestions. i was also thinking about using a staggerd stud approach for the reframing. i am actually doing a room in a room design, so the dimensions you see are inside the extra wall. any suggestions on what type of insulation to use with in the staggerd stud wall. thanks again.

YEah, forget plexi or any other plastics.. Glass is much heavier ('bout 3 time the weight of GB) and will do much better concerning sound isolation.

If it's a single wall (one frame, one side faced with GB) then staggering studs is not even possible ;) Building a double faced wall (for separating a room)on one frame then you might stagger the studs. But better results will be gained with double framing (no staggering there) I'd advise to take some extra time of and read all the goods on this forum, there's much to be learned.
