Hi:

I am finally beginning renovation on my barn to create a control room (15x17) and a recording space (18x 20). First job is to shore up the foundation of the control room to prevent potential water problems. Will send photos asap.

The only caveat is (and this took LOTS of negotiation with my wife) the recording space must also double as a garage (try not to laugh too hard ).

I do plan on acoustically treating the interior of the garage area (which has 14ft. high cielings at peak) as well as some soundproofing. However, the floor is concrete, and I must do the best I can with this by creating a "temporary" solution (carpet, pad, tile squares?) for the floor. My wife is not willing to give up the garage completely, so I had to compromise or do it in the basement.....

Any suggestions on ways I could treat the floor besides rolling a giant carpet/pad down before sessions?

How often would you need to park a car in there. Is this space going to be garage first, studio second?

I would say you could paint the concrete with some nice acrylic sealer paint, then lay out some boards or rubber mats to park the car on. You could pull up the boards/mats when you need the room to play in.

What are the garage doors made out of? That may cause you a problem with rattling and the sound reflecting.

Basically, I'm a weekend hacker with this recording stuff so I'm looking at mostly weekends and occasional evenings. So I guess that means garage first, recording space second?

I guess I'll have to make do with a pad and carpet. Still beats no space at all

Are you worried about sound leaking? Neighbors an issue?

Got much land?

Might be easier/cheaper to build a new garage and keep the barn for the studio. Just a thought.
