Backer rod equivalent for UK builders

Anyone who's tried to find backer rod here in the UK will appreciate just how difficult the stuff is to find. To my knowledge no DIY outlets stock the material and the few places that supply it will only trade with retailers.

I have found something that will do the same job though. B&Q stock a type of foam strip, about 5cm wide, which is designed for caulked expansion joints in glass brick construction. It comes in rolls about 5m long for just under £5. Cut the strip into thinner rods and voila; you have your backer rod.
