Although, I am little lost. Too many books. Maybe to narrow this a bit. If somebody would pick one, two or three books that cover everything related to physics of sound (actually room acoustic isn't that much interesting for me at this stage, only the physics of sound) which one (two or three) would it be? Not necessery for one book to cover all, but also not more than three books that would cover all this. Also it would be nice if that book (or all three books) wouldn't cost more than 250$ (altogether). Only if somebody has a quick idea. -- Mario

Kind of a tough order, Mario; are you NOT planning a studio, DO play outdoors, building an amphitheater, studying yodeling, or??!?

There are a lot of books out there, but most have been written for the purpose of fixing small or large room acoustics. Most that are worth buying run anywhere from $60 up (new price - some can be had thru Amazon for less used, but it's kind of a gamble)

Seriously, maybe it'd help if we knew what your intentions were... Steve

Thanks. And yes, this is the main thing, which I omited to explain. The thing is that, while I was lurking on this forum, for the past week or so, I simply became interested in the more basic stuff (actually, this lurking just triggered my old desire to know more about this). I became interested to learn about sound. To understand the basic things, to learn the basic principles. But I would like to have thorugh knowlage about basic principles (not just a basic knowlage of basic principles). That knowlage would help me latter in dealing with acoustics of my room. Maybe to do some acoustical experiment in it, or such things.
It is just that I was always interested in this (it is not interesting to me just to temporarely improve the acoustics of my room), and now I decided to fulfil this interest. -- Mario

In addition to all the posts already, you can read chapter's 2,3 and 4 of Geddes book. The link is chapter 3.

Well...
I know that this is one of the main concerns. All I can say that I was the best matematician of my class in primary school (which is up to 14 years of age, here in Croatia). I didn't improve since than, . In fact, I forgot everything I knew. But, I will try to improve my mathematics paralerly with learning about sound. So, this shouldn't be a problem. I don't intend to learn everything in one day, and I don't want to vaste money on a less satisfactory books, only because I am lagging in mathematics. I can understand mathematics, and I will bridge that gap, by paralerly improving mathematics. So, the depth of mathematics could be pretty deep, I will learn what I need, in time. -- Mario

Relatively light - Master Handbook of Acoustics by Everest. Also available as "digital edition", makes it searchable (very useful) approx. $30 USD

Medium, but very useful - Recording Studio Design, by Newell - approx. $65 USD

Medium-heavy math, no isolation only acoustics - Acoustic Absorbers and Diffusers: Theory, Design, and Application - Trevor J. Cox, Peter D'Antonio - Approx. $165 USD

Heavy math, deep - Room Acoustics by Kuttruff, Acoustics by Beranek. Don't remember the cost, somewhere around $60 each. I would get these AFTER absorbing the others

That's my SHORT list - I'm sure others would argue, but what's new?

Well, of course, this will never happen, . Once upon a time... I understood simple mathematics. This means that I will try deepest book. After through examination of the Index, I'll try with more simpler book. After examination of the Prologue of that one, I'll end up with what is more suitable for me, the simplest one. But... at least I tried, . -- Mario
