Are diffusers necessary?

I am still in the building stage on my studio. You can see the particulars in my T-Mix Studio Diary.
I have read many thing as to WHAT diffusors do, but not necessarily WHEN they are to be used.
Last year I had a friend give me 30 or so 2 ft square diffusor panels. I have trying to think or an appropriate place to put them , but the more I read, the more it seems that smaller rooms seem to need absorption rather than diffuser, since it seem you need to be at least 6 to 8 feet away from diffusors to not have a "scattered effect" to the soundfield.
What are your thoughts? Are there effective uses in smaller (14x32 and 10x 12) rooms?
I could post a picture of the diffusors if that would help.
I had thought of putting them in the drum room behind the drummer , or possibly at one end of the main room (14x32) at the wall furthest away from the mic positions.
The floors are reflective (cement) and most of the ceilings (9 ft) are going to be treated with broad band absorbers as are about 60 - 70 per cent of every wall. (except whichever one gets diffusors).
If necessary I will simply get rid of them as they are taking up a lot of space in my garage!
Thanks for your input.
