Incorporating surround receiver in Pro Tools environment.

Post by David »

Okay, I have been good, trying to add info and inpu to the site and not be like everyone else just asking questions. However said, I can;t seem to get an answer anywhere so I'll post it here:

I have pro tools LE digi001 and would like to hook up a harman kardon AVR120 surround receiver as one of the extra options to check quality of mixdowns. I am completely fuzzy on names of cables and plugs (can u tell?). how do I make this connection happen? will I need a line level shifter or anything else for that matter?

many thanks for the input!

First off, PT LE is NOT designed for running 5.1 or other surround mixes. You need the big system for this capability (unless you use the 6 analog outputs, and 6 tracks).

Also, I need additional info as to what exactly you're trying to accomplish.

Typically, consumer equipment has input levels of -10 where as most pro equipment will be +4. If you're just using the receiver/amp to use as you're listening/playback monitor you can use the main output of the 001 and go into an input on the receiver. You'll probably need to set the output level (it's a software setting in PT) to -10 on your master output.

AAron, thanks for the input. I know that LE is not surround ready, but I sure as hell can run my surround receiver in classic stereo mode. what i have done so far is to purchase 2 monster 1/4" jack to rca cables. my local music store adviced me that this would work, although I am sceptical, as always. lol. you rinput on changing the output levels within pro tools is outstanding. i never would have thought of that.
