potential concert recordings

here's a crazy one for you. i've been approached by the new owners of an old church building with the idea of turning it into a concert space for recording classical (and possibly 'pop' concerts).

the control room side of things if fine, as there are separate buildings to house this, so i'm only asking about treatments for the main hall...

it's enormous and needless to say the reverb lasts for about an hour in there!!

i have no idea as to the feasibility of this kind of thing (it's way outside my usual experience), only to say that it has been done with other large buildings.

anyone have any idea as to what kind of treatments would be advisible? it's a grade 2* listed building, so it all has to be demountable.

cheers,

jon

i guess no-one has any more of an idea than me with this one then!? or is it just a bit too O/T?

any pointers would be very much appreciated (including links to forums where someone might know about this kind of thing)

thanks for reading the post :)

it's a big ask jon - you really need a professional acoustician to cover a project of that scale.

yeah, i guess that's the case.

i was looking more at feasibility (theory stage), not for any concrete design. if the project goes live of course i'd be looking for a pro designer to work on it.

the group who asked me are a local charity and basically want to know if it's worth invesigating, or should they forget it from the start?

with an existing building of this size i don't really know what can be achieved with treatments - i'm basically wondering if the basic shape of the thing is practical, it is so high inside i can't imagine what would be done to tame the thing!

no worries if people feel it's too big a quesiton though, i recognise it's not the usual kind of thing under discussion here!!

cheers,

jon

There is another thread on here about church acoustics. Steve gave the guy so great advice, check it out.
