Rockwool down under - another name perhaps?

Hi,

I am starting to price out a garage conversion as per John's SAE plans.

My main intention is to provide a simple two room live room / control room studio to track drums (I,m the drummer) and evrything else from gtars to vocals.

I see rockwool mentioned as a filler for wall cavaties but after asking around here in New Zealand no one seems to have a clue what it is or where I can buy it.

We have fiberglass sound bats ( like the insulation pink bats), are these the same thing, will thay do the same job?.

Thanks

JohnrG

Mineral wool insulation is what to look for.

Right, mineral wool is the generic term. Rockwool is a trademark, don't remember whose.

Similar products are slag wool, made from steel mill byproducts. Here is a PDF file on one type of SAFB's made from mineral wool, but probably not available in NZ. I'm posting it only so you can print it out and show people what you're talking about.

In Australia, there's a company called Insulco that has similar products made from compressed fiberglas - the fluffy kind is NOT what you want for best performance though. If you go this route, the Semi-Rigid is the stuff -

Maybe John will kick in here with a more local source of actual mineral wool, being he's kind of a "next-door-neighbor"... Steve
