Low ceiling...Will this cause problems

Hi

I have a small studio setup at home,i have converted the cellar to accomodate all my recording equipment......

Dimensions are 17ft x 11ft x 6ft 4inches tall......

As you can see the height is very low.....

My question is will such a low ceiling cause problems when recording vocals...?

I was also considering partitioning off 1/3rd of the space to use as a vocal booth....Roughly 6ft x 11ft x 6ft 4inches.....

Any ideas welcome......
BTW...Fantastic Forum..... :D

wow that's low - I'd just make it by 2" :)

your best bet in this circumstance is to deaden the ceiling as much as you can i.e. rigid fibreglass 703 type over the lot!!. BTW if you want to ceiling to feel higher cover it in a dark material i.e. Black ;)

cheers

Man....6 ft 4 is really low. I am roughly 6 ft 2...so that would make me feel very uncomfortable in your space.

Is your space going to be used as your hobby space, or as a commercial facility?

If it is personal, then you know your needs better than us all....but if it is going to be a commercial space, I would seriously consider finding a better location.

I just couldn`t imagine making music in such a restrictive enviornment..

Maybe you could break up the feeling of low cielings by painting the ceilings black?

Also...and this may cost a lot of money...i don`t know...but aren`t there ways to get your house jacked up? I am pretty sure I have seen it done on home improvement channels...Like they life the whole house up from the foundation and then build under it to support it at it`s new height.

Hi

Well its mainly for my own personal use,but i do get the odd singer in to record vocals.....(No Bands...Drummers etc)

I live in a small town in England, and only advertise the studio as a songwriters studio, based around my keyboards and samplers,or they bring in a backing track to sing along to......

But i just wondered if the low ceiling would cause problems....

I have damped down some mid/high frequencies on the walls with acoustic foam....

Although would it be a good idea to section off say 1/3rd of the space...
11ft x 6ft x 6ft 4inches...
And really deaden down the reflections in that area for vocal recording

Thanks Paul

Paul - if your control room is treated correctly it will also be correct for vocal recording. Do the whole room.
