This company makes foam acoustic panels...

I write a e-mail to this company (http://www.mbakustik.de/module_eng.htm) and they tell me that panels are made of diferent plies of foam. And panels don't have frame. By doing this, even the sides absorb sound. "We are using a wodden backpanel to fix it on the
wall, that's all"

But I usually read in this forum that foams doesn't work on acoustics...

Opinions?? :?

hello hugo,
as far as I understand it (which means nothing), foam does work pretty good, if it is a good one!!! and used properly.
The problem is, that lots of comercials really overdo things.

And in most cases you can build your own absorbtion panels with rock/glasswool which are very effective and normally much cheaper.
just my 0,2c :D

thanks the dreamer, I'm building some panel of rockwool too. But next to my town there is a car acousctics foams industry and they give me all the foam they don't want if I'm interested...

So materials for me will be free...

That's great!!! :D
So I would definitly take it and do some tests.
If it's good foam...yippieh!

You could also use thin foampanels to cover the rockwool, no hassle with other coveroptions then.

That's great THE DREAMER, notify me your results when you test the panels.

Maybe I was a bit unclear:
If I were you, I would take the stuff and test it, because you get it for free. :D
But you can also send it to me and I'm gonna test it then

Hugo,

Good foam works, but this statement disturbs me:

"We are using a wodden backpanel to fix it on the wall, that's all"<

As soon as you block the rear of an absorber panel with a solid material like wood, it no longer absorbs as well to low frequencies when mounted straddling a corner or spaced off the wall. That is, the wood backing negates the benefit from an air gap.

Ok the dreamer I didn't understand you quite well

Hi Ethan could you specify what is good foam?? As I said before, I can get car acoustics foams for free. :D They have 10 or 20 kind of diferent foams and thinkness... But I don't know what is the good foam you say... :? [/b]

Hugo,

> could you specify what is good foam?? <

Foam that absorbs as well as the same thickness of 3 pcf (pounds per cubic foot) rigid fiberglass would be considered "good" I think.

So should I test the diferent kind of foams? The more density the better in foams?

Hugo,

> So should I test the diferent kind of foams? <

How would you propose to test them yourself?

My point was that you can compare published data to see which products are better than others. Assuming the vendors are telling the truth. Which may be a big assumption.
