Need help with inexpensive monitor selection

We are looking for a set of inexpensive monitors for a friends project studio. The guys started building the project studio before going over this site so there are a few snags in the control room design. The space is a very small 7' x 12' so I figure no need to invest in a set of top of the line monitors.
Does anybody have some opinions on the following:
Event TR-6
Wharfedale Diamond 8.2
Or perhaps we've overlooked something in the sub $400.00 U.S. dollars market.
The guys are really on a tight budget so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
dougo

In that price range, I would HIGHLY recommend the Tannoy Reveal (passive). I think they're around the US$350 mark from Sweetwater Sound. I use them at one of my clients' studios, and I use them in my home studio.
Happy shopping!

Bruce,
For the Tannoy Reveal passives could you use a basic home stereo receiver for the power amp? The reason I ask is because the guys have a home stereo they could use for that purpose.
I was thinking that would also be a great way to go at my home studio since I have a classic Yamaha receiver from 1976 that still works like a champ!
Thanks for your input on this subject,

hi, you can get away with using a hifi amplifier if it has a bypass. I mean the signal must be passing by the bass/treble management most amplifiers have.
Have a look at the Fostex Pm series. Small and cheap but not bad.
They are active so no hassle with hifi-stuff

Thanks so much for the input so far. I'll be checking into the options you've suggested.
