sonopan vs owens for bass traps

hi i was wondering about the validity of using SONOPAN boards

http://www.materiauxspecl.com/en/acoustic.html

instead of the more conventional owens 703 often recommened for use in bass trap construction.

here some info on density:

703, plain 1" 3.0 pcf (48 kg/m3)

sonopan, 3/4" 15lbs ft3

info taken from their relative sites, but both seem very heavy. maybe i don't understand this density thing though as a 4'x8' of sonopan only weighs 26.5lbs

anyway here is a link to the sonopan pdf where i lifted the information.

http://www.materiauxspecl.com/en/pdf/sonopan.pdf

its non toxic, recycled and easy to locate here in canada.

I,ve used it with great results for sound insulation but have not tried it for sound absorbtion.

any feeback would be gretly appriciated.

thankyou

Kieran - they are two totally different products.

Sonopan is a soft fibreboard like celotex whereas 703 is an insulation and is normally used in 3 or 4" thickness when used for bass trapping.

The .pdf gave no absorption figures for sonopan because it's not designed for that purpose.

If you can (please) update your profile to include a location, there may be cheaper alternatives, such as other manufacturers of fiberglass or mineral/rockwool in your area... Steve

I,ve updated my profile.

it could be a great help if anyone knows where i could by the ridgid fibre galss on the island on montreal, as I'm finding it hard to get a reply from owens corning, and some of their alternatives, about their products.

thanks for taking an interest

From the Building Products forum, down the page a ways -

http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2809

There may be others there, have a look. SPI, one of the nationwide chains, only lists a northern US location for Canadian source, sorry... Steve
